Whatever the outcome of this game, I think we finally have ourselves a real Pac 12 caliber qb. That feels pretty good. (He's made some mistakes, but he's 19 and he's the reason we're in this game. Aside from 2 INTs his stats are big.) Agreed?

Orphey not exactly a bright spot tonight. I'd feel better about the DBs if our coach had done something besides practice law for 12 years or so before joining the staff. Or if he had ever coached at any collegiate level, anywhere, before being put in charge of our DBs.

I did and I will. He is terrible. USU abused him. Weber attacked him on their deep ball. OSU went to him every chance they could.

He isn't the only problem. Orchard with two PF's that lead to TD's. Dres not fighting for the ball, leading to INT's. Our OL/DL is pathetic.

I think we can do that, since we won't have to rely on our defensive secondary to stop a passing game or catch balls that hit them in the hands.

Why does Kyle gets so many passes? Five OC's in five years. No QB to back up Wynn. Puts in Sitake at DC, the defense has gotten worse every year since. BJ at OC. Sharif at DB coach. Finn and the OL problems. We are told our recruiting is better, but we have a RS Fresh and two JC Guys at CB (shouldn't we have two Soph/Jr by now).

Since Andersen left, has Whitt made a good decision?

Disappointing. Time to go to bed. Some serious issues on the defensive side of the ball, and I don't think it is all about the players. Reilly had a solid game, but was beat several times in coverage by the height of their TE's.

443 to 279. That's the difference in the passing yardage. A lot of yardage given up on huge plays. 16+ yards per reception. That's got to be tightened up. I am listening to the post game show to see what kwhit has to say.

FS1 needs to apologize to everyone who watched that game. One of the most wretchedly-produced games I've ever seen on TV. Sideline reporters talking over officials announcing penalties. Bolerjack frequently unable to describe the play on the field and coming up with stupid cliches ("Did Oregon State score too early?" ... that's stupid fanboi shit that coaches and players don't worry about with over two minutes to go) and incorrect interpretations of the rules (On Wilson's second rushing touchdown and during the review, Boler wondered aloud if the ball crossed the outside of the pylon, an irrelevant matter since the goal line, with relation to the ball, is never-ending. The ball can cross the goal line somewhere around Fort Douglas, but if your feet last touched the ground in the field of play, it's six points).

No identification of the Utah special teams player who got whistled for the personal foul. No video of the second Orchard personal foul penalty. Even Joey Harrington, who was the only person on the broadcast who earned his paycheck, flat out blew it criticizing the Mannion intentional grounding call, which was as by-the-book as it gets.

Reilly had a shit game. For someone who's touted as a first-team P-12 selection and high NFL draft choice, all we needed from Reilly in this game was a sack or forced fumble. With our issues in the back seven, having our best defensive player grading out as "solid" is unacceptable. He needs to be dominant in flashes or key moments. And outside of keeping contain on Cooks on the fly sweep early fourth that went for a 4-yard loss, I didn't hear Reilly's name called all night.

SoCalPat

If you call five yards behind the TE "at his feet" you might have a point.

Mannion threw the ball away in order to avoid running and/or taking a loss or hit. He was not in any imminent danger of losing yardage, so he ended the play by grounding the ball. He didn't come close to throwing the ball in the vicinity of a receiver -- his TE was running AWAY from the spot Manning threw it.

One thing that bothered me the whole game was the fact that we were losing, and we were losing because our secondary is terrible, and yet Rowe was yapping his mouth off after every play like be was trying out for a spot on BYU.

I know there's a bit of a dick-waving contest between the NEZ and the MUSS with regard to which section is louder, but we chose to defend the NEZ instead of the SEZ and where the MUSS is at in overtime. Someone needs to ask Kyle if he really believes the NEZ is louder, or at least ask him to explain his rationale behind choosing the north end of the field in overtime. Quite frankly, I was surprise we chose that end of the stadium to defend.

That's a hollow consolation prize. OSU traveled with several linemen that weren't pegged to make any conference roadies this year, and they were already weak at RB before Storm Woods left the game. Yet they protected Mannion especially well. I'd call OSU's O-line vs. our D-line a draw at best.

Definitely. At best.

One sack. Not many hurries. I think it's a clear win for OSU.

I still can't believe we were -3 in turnovers in a game where we gave up 443 pass yards and we only lost by 3. Our offense is real this year. But, we cannot come out flat like today. We don't seem to have the kind of defense that will win games for us.

Playing not to lose... sucks. We should be in it to win it. We were too conservative.

Oregon State took big chances. 4th and inches and they run a throw-back to the quarterback all the way down the field.

I give those guys credit... they threw everything at winning.

Damn... 3 interceptions and 12 yards total offense in the first quarter and we end up rolling into the final seconds of this game with a chance to win outright.

The anticipation of this game is starting become unbearable. The late start just adds to the build up. Here are the keys to the game as I can see them.

1. Sean Mannion and Brandin Cook against the Ute Secondary.

Mannion has been as prolific passer as there is in the nation. He is averaging just shy of 400 yards/game on the season and is completing nearly 80% on the season, albeit against questionable competition. The Ute secondary was shaky against USU giving up about 350 yards to the Aggies. They tightened things up last week, but how much can you gauge against the Wildcats. Utah will likely bracket Cook with Rowe and a corner. I don't see that we will see the Utes assign a specific Cb against Cook( eg. as they would pair Brandon Burton vs the other teams best receiver regardless of formation), unless one of them appears to be having success against him. The remainder of the OSU's passing game is more possession type passes; screens, tight end delay's, etc. So the LB's and Walker will be called upon to lock up that portion of the game plan. Mannion will present different challenges than Keeton did. He will not be a the same threat to extend the play, but throws with excellent anticipation and can fit the ball into tight spots.

2. Tenny Palepoi and LT Tuipulotu against OSU's interior line.

There has been plenty of press about the injuries to the Beaver's front 5. IMO, the biggest development is that the starting center, Isaac Seumalo, has been moved out to RT due to injuries. Josh Mitchell will now be the center. He played the second half of the Hawaii game at center. Their RG, rFr Grant Bays, will be making his first collegiate start. If Tenny and LT can get great push against this trio, and force Mannion to bring his eyes down to avoid the rush, then Orchard and Reilly will have a heyday, as Mannion is not a very mobile quarterback.

3. Utah's Oline vs OSU's front 7

It is time for the Ute line to put up or shut up about how much improved they are over last season. The Beaver's line is somewhat undersized and better pass rushers than they are against the run. If we are going to establish a potent running attack at any time this season, we need to see tomorrow. I want to see a consistent push. I would rather see six 6 yard gains for 36 yards than get five 2 yard gains and a 26 yard gain for 36 yards. We need to be able to run effectively to have success in the conference, and if we don't this game, it will be tough sledding the rest of the year.

4. Travis Wilson vs the OSU secondary

The Beaver's secondary is suspect as is their LB crew in coverage. If the running game can keep the Beaver's DLine honest, Murphy, Anderson, and crew may have another banner day. Their safeties are susceptible to being beat over the top, which should keep their attention on Anderson and Denham. With that, I think Murphy and Tonga will have break out games. The Beaver's are going to have a hard time staying with these two if they try to cover with Linebackers. As long as the offense is not one dimensional, the passing game is going to have its choice of targets all night long.

I hate to label the third game of the season as a must win game, but that is how I feel about this one. If we don't come out on top, it is going to be very difficult for this team to accomplish what we all want to see from them.

Can't sleep. We only won 1 1/2 of these points. I still don't know what to think of our running game. We got such little push. I can't fathom that we had over 250 yards rushing. I need to watch the game again to see what we did different. We don't move defenders off the line very well and depend on making creases that are on the RB to find. It would be nice to make some holes that take some of the decision making out of it. Make a hole that makes you go "well I could have gained 15 through that one".

TO margin it what lost this game. Poor defense is just the what kept it close. Our overall defensive talent is clearly worse than last year, however I think that there is potential for improvement. Oddly, I am a little more confident regarding the BYU game after this loss as I think that we will be able to put up some points against their D, which was a concern I have had. I think we will come to play next week. If Whit can dig in and figure out the the defensive woes, I am hopeful that the offense will keep us in games. I am not sure that there is a defensive scheme change that will mitigate the talent shortage all over there. Wilson looks poised to be amazing the next few years. I hope we can place some talent around him then and recruit some more talent to the defense.

When we scored that last touchdown, I told my wife, "We need to go for two here." She gave me a "Uh huh" with as much enthusiasm as I give my 6 year old after the latest "And it's also a pillow!" commercial.

I know tradition says to kick it and take it to overtime if you're at home. But tradition also told me that Utah was going to play it too conservative. I don't think anyone on here felt that we could stop Mannion at that point. Sure enough...

As discouraged as I am over the defense, I have to admit that OSU has one hell of an offense -- Mannion and Cooks are the real deal.

At least part of the reason for the decline in the defense has been the rise of the offenses in the Pac-12. The opposing offenses in this league just keep getting better, thus the increasing challenge to the defense is almost exponential.

BYU - W (Yes I'm going to be optimistic about this game)
UCLA - L
Stanford - L
Arizona - L
USC - L
ASU - L
Oregon - L
Washington St - W
Colorado - W

5-7.

Whittingham gets 5 years in the Pac-12 to ensure he has 4 full recruiting cycles, but I'm not optimistic he is the right guy for the job. We just lost to a bad team again.

How did I miss this last night?

Arizona and USC are toss up games. We may be underdogs being on the road, but we can compete with either of these teams.

I'm not sold on OSU being a bad team. Clearly our DBs are inexperienced but in rewatching the game, a lot of those big plays by mannion and cooks were by a very good offense.

Mentally the Utes showed a lot of toughness in this game. How they come out on Saturday will let us know if this these guys are going to be able to compete in the PAC this season. Short term memory loss? I sure hope so.

Our young DBs got beat by a great offense but many times were in good position; they just got the short end of the stick. That's not to say they played a great game, but they certainly didn't look like the keystone cops out there. Our DLine's failure to get to Mannion and force him into bad decisions also contributed to the 400+ yard passing game.

Thoughts after "sleeping" on it:

Mannion is probably the best passer we will see this year, but there are plenty of other QBs good enough to shred our defense. Kelly did it to us a year ago, and I expect him to do it again.

We will not see another defense as bad as this one the rest of the way. I loved seeing the galloping giraffe kill them with read-option, but I don't expect it to be that successful again. I also don't see Poole racking up another 200 total yards unless we start opening holes for him. As good as Wilson was, he was unable to get the ball in the right place on any of the big downfield shots we took.

BYU obviously moves into must win territory now.

Random thought (not the most important thing but I was wondering): Is it time to start recruiting bigger DBs? I know safeties are ideally bigger and corners are smaller, but it looked like our little corners were getting worked quite a bit by bigger receivers.

OSU also sure loved throwing deep to the left side. Potter? Is that #29's name?

EDIT: Our little corners would do better if the D line could get to the QB regularly,or even occasionally. We can't have games w/o a single sack.

After sleeping on it, the outlook is rosier than it was last night (for me).

First off, OSU was a preseason ranked team. I know they dropped one to EWU, but EWU was ranked #1 in FCS for a couple of weeks last year and made it to the semifinals of the playoffs (yes, I followed EWU last year. I hate myself at times). OSU has a very good QB (I think Mannion has a shot at the NFL), a crappy defense, and some good skill players. EXACTLY like the Utes. Unsurprisingly, Utah & OSU played a tight game that basically hinged on Mannion having more experience than Wilson (and his 3 INTs, one of which was a pick-6, and another of which led to a TD on the ensuing OSU play). The Utes ARE Oregon State. I don't see that as a negative thing. Ten years ago, we would have been wondering how well the Utes stack up against a run-of-the-mill Pac-10 team. Well, the Utes ARE a run-of-the-mill Pac-12 team. This shows huge progress overall, even if the three plays in OT were a bit anticlimactic.

I think there is a lot of positive to take away from this game.

I think the Utes have improved since Utah State. Wilson looked great running the ball and was generally accurate. I think Erickson called a masterful game, even down to having that final TO in his pocket so he could call a rush for Wilson on 3rd down & goal with time running out. Poole established himself as THE back of record. Kicking game was solid. Finally, that place was rocking last night. This is good for recruiting, fundraising, and suggests that Utah's transition to the Pac-12 is complete. I hope the crowds keep coming.

There are also a lot of negatives. Obviously the defense was a sieve. But this is where Kyle has worked his magic so many times before. The first two drives (where OSU scored 10) looked like the defense was adjusting to Pac-12 speed & effort. I think the unit will continue to improve, but won't be anything more than okay. The Utes still have a shot at a bowl game if they continue to improve. Assuming from the get-go that the Utes were unlikely to contend for the Pac-12 championship (or really even a spot in the conf. championship game), isn't this all we really wanted?

Mark it down. The Utes will beat either USC or one of the Arizona schools.

What bothers me most about this loss is the fact that the Utes are now 0-3 in opening PAC12 conference games. Well, that and idiotic penalties committed at times when all the player has to do is not be a dumbass that gives the opposition 15 free yards at a crucial time during the game.

This. One of the primary underpinnings of our defense is our ability to pressure the QB. Our secondary gets torched when we don't.

Frankly I was not as disappointed in our secondary as most of you. We were in position to make plays on every deep throw and made the tackle when we didn't knock the ball away. The Beaver receivers made a bunch of tough catches.

The most disappointing play for me was was when they got the TD on the screen. The guy ran all the way while the entire secondary stood around and watched.

OSU converted on a 3rd & 15, 3rd & 12, 3rd & 11, 3rd & 10 three times, and a 3rd & 7. They were 2/2 on 4th down.

Usually, when a team is converting on 3rd it is because they manage to get to 3rd and short. But the Beavers killed us in 3rd and long situations.

Here's the thing. If we have a guy who is 6'+ and fast, we are going to make him a WR. We need that size there to do unto others what OSU did to us last night.

The most important part of defending a team like OSU is getting pressure on the QB, and we failed to do that. You pressure a QB, and all your DB come off looking like Dion Sanders.
