I thought our bye weeks were oddly timed when I first saw the schedule, but now I'm glad we have one. Hopefully Carter and Paul are back. What's Whittingham's status for that?

OSU is 4-1 coming off a shootout win at CU. Mannion is till Mannion, but Cooks is gone. Go Utes! Here's to over .500 in Pac-12 play!

I prefer clean beavers (as opposed to dirty, stinky, filthy, filthy, filthy beavers), but whatever.

If Tim Patrick doesn't get more passes thrown his direction, then perhaps he can at least teach the rest of the receivers how to hang on. He almost has Ben Cahoon hands.

Do we go faster/quicker vs the Beavs? Could McLellon obliterate them on a touch pass sweep? Will KT find ways to get the DC Oh-fense train up to full speed?

Mannion is still nails and can still hit a dime 40 yards downfield. If we put him on his back 5+ times, especially if they are coverage sacks, then I like our chances.

Obviously I would like our chances better at home than are Reser, but we have played them tough the last few years & they were simply the better team. These are not the same Beavers we saw last year. I think our defense is going to benefit more from the extra time than their defense. We stuff the run & sack Mannion 4-5 times. They struggle with dual threat QBs. We combine for 200+ yards rushing from Kendal & Booker and throw for an additional 250.

The game will be a much lower scoring affair than last year. Each team will score between 20-30 points.

Oregon State knows it has to prepare for both Kendal and Travis. Should be interesting. Here's the Oregonian's OSU beat writer:

I don't think we have seen enough from him to know what he can actually do. A full game on the road against OSU is just what the doctor ordered. I'm predicting he will have another close to or more than 100 yard rushing game & around 250 passing. Solid performance.

No excuse not to win this game. Even with Mannion, OSU is mediocre on offense and hasn't shown much in way of big-play capability this year. There's a reason why they're 9th nationally in TOP, but 98th in first downs and 78th in scoring. OSU does do a very good job of getting its defense off the field, as its 23rd nationally in third-down defense and 10th in pass efficiency defense. That's also come against the 95th SOS, per Sagarin. It's OSU's home league opener and we can make mistakes that can let OSU win this. But if we play a clean game, we win by a TD.

I think this will be a tight game. We are better than OSU, but they play a game that gives us fits. The gunslingers of this conference always challenge our D, and I think they make Kyle play a little conservative with the offense. The real question will be whether OSU's D can get Thompson off the field quickly. If they do, I think we're in trouble. If Thompson and DevBook can move the chains, we'll be golden.

The health of Carter and our LB's is key.

LA Ute
10-13-2014, 07:13 PM
At the risk of over-simplifying, I think we win if we make Mannion uncomfortable in the pocket like we did with Hundley (and we didn't with Halliday). I am sure Kalani learned a lot from the last two games and that we will mostly rush 4 (with occasional blitzes if we can get away with them). Of course the DBs and LBs have to keep their assignments too so Mannion can't dump off quick passes to get out of trouble.

I'm conflicted about this game. On the one hand, at 4-1 (1-1), it is hard to call it a "must" win. On the other hand, given the schedule we face upcoming beyond this game, and the potential for it to go down hill quickly, so it still feels like a must win.

I believe that IF we can get this one, it is going to give us a ton of momentum heading into a game against USC where we have an extra day or two to prepare.

The good news (versus the last two years) is I think that we are better at several positions, and ultimately that will be the difference between what we've done over the last two years and what we have the potential to do this season.

Goes without saying, but we're going to have to pressure Manion all day long and not let him sit and pick apart our defense, and ride Booker all the way.

Interesting stat and one of the big keys to the game from the Pac 12 blog:

When Utah picks up the initial first down of a drive, it scores 59.5 percent of the time, second-best in the Pac-12 behind Oregon. The Utes have scored on 41.2 percent of all drive this year.

From the Pac 12 Mailbag:

Peter in Denver writes: The OSU vs. Utah game seems very pivotal. They are both 4-1 and the loser of this game may miss a bowl game (Utah's schedule is brutal). While the winner could be a dark horse to win their respective division (either would control its own destiny with a win). What do the Beavers need to do to win this game?

Kevin Gemmell: Oregon State is already in the hole since it's playing at home (http://espn.go.com/blog/pac12/post/_/id/78614/coaches-cant-explain-home-field-disadvantage). Nothing the Beavers can do about that, though.

This is a huge swing game we were targeting several weeks ago that could make or break the postseason hopes of either team. Let’s start with the Utes. After this week they’ve got USC, at Arizona State, Oregon, at Stanford, Arizona and at Colorado. If you would have asked me in the preseason if the Utes would go into the Rose Bowl and win, I’d probably say no. Then again, I didn’t think they’d lose at home to WSU, either. If Utah beats Oregon State, it’s hard not to imagine them finding at least one more win from that bunch.

As for the Beavers, I wouldn’t say it’s that much easier. At Stanford before three straight home games against Cal, WSU and ASU before closing on the road at Washington and then home for the Civil War.

So what does OSU have to do to win? First, start by containing Nate Orchard (http://espn.go.com/college-football/player/_/id/550231/nate-orchard). If they can do that, it will lead to step No. 2, run the football successfully. When they do that, they can set up the pass. The hope is that Victor Bolden (http://espn.go.com/college-football/player/_/id/552103/victor-bolden) is closer to 100 percent. The off week helped in that regard. I’d also avoid kicking to Kaelin Clay (http://espn.go.com/college-football/player/_/id/504726/kaelin-clay). But that’s just me.

BS. You seem to think OSU ought to be some kind of patsy for us. We didn't "win ugly". We beat a team that is roughly evenly matched with us, and we won only because we have one player, Devonte Booker, who is phenomenal, a freak of nature, our kicker is great, and our defense is good. I guess our O line must be pretty special considering what Booker did tonight. Basically, we're pretty good outside of our qbs I guess.

They're excellent at run blocking....pass blocking is another story

White did it game after game.
Yeah, I love the Wolfman.
Always seemed to fall forward for extra yards.

BS. You seem to think OSU ought to be some kind of patsy for us. We didn't "win ugly". We beat a team that is roughly evenly matched with us, and we won only because we have one player, Devonte Booker, who is phenomenal, a freak of nature, our kicker is great, and our defense is good. The rest of the team is just bad.

I give Whit and Christensen credit for knowing our limitations. Just give the ball to Booker, every time that counts, because he's all there is on offense.

Calm down. The irrefutable point is that this team knows how to win close games on the road. We haven't been able to say that about a Ute team for a few years. We have average QBs, uneven DBs, a great DL and very good LBs. We have receivers who underperform regularly and a below average OL. Yet we find ways to win. That's both fascinating and fun to watch. And we are 5-1, a single point from being 6-1. No one expected this. Enjoy it!

Am I correctly recalling that we continued to rush 4 even when we were trying to protect a lead?

We did that last week as well.

Whit said after WSU it was an error to go to 3 and he wouldn't do it again.

(Utah is the best team in the country at creating pressure with 4 or less....I think 80% of our sacks are non-blitz sacks)

Where does Nate Orchard rank on the list of all time ute defensive ends? Ive been watching for twenty years and to my untrained eye, hes as good as anything ive seen.

The bus is leaving, last chance to get on!

We are winning, and will continue to win because we are absolutely lights out in 2 1/2 of 3 phases of the game. The passing game is the only thing keeping us from being elite in this conference. And the blame is equally shared between the protection, receivers and qb decision making.

You have to give OSU's defense some of the credit. They were ranked ahead of us in conference coming into the game. They are stellar and will keep the Beavers in every game they have left.

Looking ahead, the quality of defenses we face takes a significant nose dive. ASU is a horrible defensive team. As is Arizona and Colorado. Stanford D is probably better than ours, but their offense is possibly worse than ours. That game may end in a 0-0 tie. USC's defense is good, but they have had some wtf games as well(BC with over 400 yds rushing, ASU with over 500 passing come to mind).

We won again on the road. I thought we would get 3 road wins on the season. With 3 in hand already, we are now playing with house money.

Too many people care about how you look in a win. Winning in the road is hard, so even a 3-2 win is meaningful. Stop worrying about how we get the job done, and just care that we got it done.

Last call, all aboard!

I agree that there is absolutely nothing to complain about when we beat good teams on the road. I was giddy when DevBo shook off that last arm tackle and sauntered in for six. That game could have come out either way, and we won, so the football Gods must like us.

It's still hard to watch this offense try to throw the ball - I'm hoping that changes, but have no idea how it's going to.
