I was going to go with some kind of Goldie Hawn reference, but then I decided to simplify.

Senior day arrives as the 8-2 Wildcats come in to RES to take on 7-3 Utah with the Pac 12 South still hanging in the balance (thanks OSU!)

Both teams have had some luck to get where they are. This late in the season, we still only have 4 common opponents:

Oregon: Arizona wins @Oregon, we lose at home. The most surprising result of the Pac-12 season.

USC: Arizona loses close game on road, we win close game at home.

WSU: Arizona blows them out on road. We lose at home.

UCLA: Arizona can't score and loses 17-7 on road. We can score and win on road.

Goldie Hawn when you have Nicolas Cage, Holly Hunter, and the Cohen Brothers?

At least you didn't go Keanu and Sandy.

Solomon may be a bit gimpy at kick off on Saturday. If that's the case, he may not be able to walk by the end of the game. A great way for Orchard to finish his RES experience. http://www.foxsports.com/arizona/story/arizona-s-solomon-dealing-with-tender-ankle-111714

I hate Arizona. The last time they played at RES their players were the biggest punks on the sideline. Before every kick-off they would mimic something Reggie Dunn had done after scoring a TD off a kickoff and then promptly kick the ball out of bounds or away from him. I hope we stomp their asses.

From the release:

Fans are encouraged be in their seats early on Saturday to see 17 Utah seniors honored in a pre-game ceremony. Listed alphabetically, seniors who will be introduced follow (Tevin Carter will not be recognized as he plans to apply for a medical hardship season): Dres Anderson, WR; Brian Blechen, DB; Kaelin Clay, WR; Wykie Freeman, DB; Jacoby Hale, LB; Sese Ianu, DT; Chandler Johnson, DB; Andre Lewis, WR; Geoffrey Norwood, WR; Nate Orchard, DE; Davion Orphey, DB; Ryan Petersen, WR; Marc Pouvave, OL; Greg Reese, DE; Eric Rowe, DB; Junior Salt, OL; Westlee Tonga, TE.

That is quite a group of seniors when you sit back and think of it. There's a lot of positive impact to our program among the 17 seniors will be sending off. Between redshirts etc, I'm sure some of these guys transitioned from the MWC, and likely committed to Utah while it was still a MWC school. They've seen a lot of ups and downs and have suffered through back to back 5-7 seasons.

I would like nothing more than to send these seniors out with a winning record in conference, and possibly a 9 or 10 win season.

It's really an amazing list of seniors, who have come from a wide-variety of backgrounds:
- Signed with the MWC Utes and have been coached WAY up (Orchard, Hale, Tonga, Freeman)
- Signed with the MWC Utes and arrived as fully-formed football Gods (Blechen, Rowe)
- JC guys who took a while, but have made an impact (Ianu, Orphey)
- JC guys who burst onto the scene like a record machine (Clay, Jr Salt)
- a bunch of guys who, for various reasons, never made a huge impact (everyone else)

When you go back to that 2010 class, there was a ton of talent in it...even with a couple of washouts.

Also, though he is gone, Lucky Radley, also from that class, had a significant impact on this program. I gotta think that he wishes he just stuck with the Utes given that he's been buried on the depth chart at SDSU.

Agreed. One of my favorite signing classes of all-time, even though my two favorites (Damian Payne and Terrell Reese) washed out.

That class also brought us Ken Scott, Dres, John Cullen, Joe Kruger, Star, and Joseph Smith. Praise to the men!

Only two teams this season have had real success running the ball against us: ASU and Oregon. They are both read-option run teams. Is that bad news for us against Arizona? Solomon has had some good running games and some bad running games, but he averages around 10 carries per game.

Solomon being slightly hobbled, and a wet field will hopefully help.

Absolutely! I am completely looking forward to an early kick off time, a game that I think is a good match up with our defense and their offense etc. Special teams and turnovers will be the deciding factor. If we win The turnover battle by at least two, we win. Field position will also be a big factor. I would really like to see a blocked kick or punt. I don't think we've seen either this year.

Well, I think part of the reason is that, no matter how we're getting there, we're still winning and frankly are enjoying our best season in the Pac 12. Even when you have shitty qb play, winning teams rarely make that kind of change...and they sure as hell aren't playing for next year unless they aren't bowl eligible.

I'm trying to think of examples where a team has benched its QB while having a winning record. None come to mind off the top of my head.

Also, it just doesn't matter if you don't have guys that go up and get the ball. Not one of our guys has gone after the ball like any of Arizona's WRs so far.

AZ knows what's coming, and we aren't making them pay so far.

You know, it sure seems like Dave Christensen's been a bust as OC. Problem is, Utah has done well enough that the guy with ultimate accountability (Kyle) shouldn't be fired, and Kyle can't really get away with changing his OC again.

Looking forward to basketball season, where we have both excellent players and consistently effective coaching.

Key to the 2nd half: the defense. If we give up any more big runs/passes, we will be too deep. But if we can shut them down somehow, I like our chances to get to 21.

Drive-killing penalty. No protection for Travis, poor throw, followed by a safety blitz (which we simply cannot handle) and a big sack. Awful. A score in that possession and it would've been a ballgame.

This has been a really good season. One of the better Ute seasons that we have ever had. The frustrating thing is that if we could have even got subpar play from our QB, we could have had a special season. We have the worst QB play in the conference and we were a few plays away from winning the south. I've never enjoyed watching a Ute defense more than this year (except for maybe 1994). Deserve doesn't have much to do with it, imo. The last two years we've had a lot of things go against us. This year we've had more go for us and here we are at 7-4. Everyone would've taken this result before the season. Everyone.

A follow up on my own thought:

As bad as we were, and we were bad, I think we still have a shot to win if we just don’t turn it over. The Poole fumble cost us at least 7 points. The first Wilson pick cost us at least 3. Without those, we go into the locker room at 14-10 or maybe better. The fumbled snap (not a turnover officially, but just as good as one) cost us at least 3 points. The second Wilson pick cost us at least 7. At that point, the game was over, and Manning's pick made the score worse.

Throw penalties in there as well. In the third quarter Utah had a nice drive going and picked up a first down around the AZ 30 (easily in field goal range) but it came back due to holding; Utah ended up punting after Wilson took a sack. That's another 3 or possibly 7 points off the board. Then, of course, you also had the Clay punt return where the hold appeared inconsequential to the play.

Utah has succeeded this year by generally winning penalties and turnovers. Saturday was an uncharacteristic game in the way Utah lost those battles and also had the defense get trucked. (Offensively, the game wasn't that unique, unfortunately, aside from the turnovers and penalties).

Yes, and that is unfortunately how we have to beat CU as well. Play very conservatively, hope for a defense/special teams score, punt a lot, and get lucky in not giving up too many big plays. Nobody should have to beat CU that way.

But it did, and it has all year. A couple of big plays, a few turnovers - that's all that separates this game from our great wins this year.

Speaking of great wins, Stanford is still #1 on the "wins since the Sugar Bowl" power ranking, but UCLA has a chance to overtake it.

I am trying to forget this game. I was unable to watch most of the first quarter and all of of the fourth (I heard that part on the radio), and although I recorded the game I won't watch it. I will probably delete it from my DVR.

This is not the game you are looking for...

This game never happened.

If I had a videotape of the game I'd burn it.

Utah has succeeded this year with a football version of college basketball's old four corners offense and tough defense, like Don Haskins' old teams: Eat the clock with running plays and a few short passes, make the opponent eat clock to get close to our goal line, get as many field goals as possible and hope to eke out a touchdown maybe with one big play. Then have a chance to win in the final few minutes or at the end of regulation.

What's death to this constipated strategy is turnovers and giving up the big play (which is why the circumstances of Oregon's first touchdown were especially devastating to this team).

I can't decide if Whit is brilliant in getting the most out of his limited personnel or too limited in his ambition with the personnel he has.

This is an apt analogy (Haskins/Whittingham). I actually think this is our best chance of winning with our current talent.

Ultimately I think pro-style is the best option for Utah - but we need totally different personnel (outside of running back) to pull it off.

UA vs Utah will be on P12N in 5 minutes......for all you Arizona fans, those who want to know how not to manage/run an offense, and those who want to know how to play without energy. :)
