The Greek system in the south, in general, is a different animal. A big deal. A really, really big deal. Like cotillion I guess.

Not everybody's cup of tea but I didn't see anything offensive here. Wonder if the AA guy in the video has had any blowback for his appearance.

There is plenty of diversity.

I see both blondes and brunettes.

And the University of Utah.

You need to spend a little time on campus again. I spent half the day there today watching new freshmen (including my daughter) move in to the dorms. BYU it ain't.

I've recently been on the U of U campus ... last fall to be precise. It's as vanilla as the rest of the state. You want to see diversity, visit Toronto and my campus, which is waaaaaay out in the suburbs. It will blow your mind.

TB, I love you, man, but you are demonstrably wrong about this. The U's ethnic diversity is "on a par with the national average:"

BYU, on the other hand, "is ranked #1428 (http://www.collegefactual.com/rankings/diversity/ethnic/#1428) in ethnic diversity nationwide, with a student body composition that is below the national average....the chart below also explores ethnic diversity among the faculty at BYU."

It's still 72% white  Which is so very much different than where I live and work, it's unfathomable ... and it's on par with Alabama, so a comparison is apt. Not sure why you're getting worked up about this. The University of Utah is vanilla, any way you slice it. And I never argued BYU isn't equally or more so, so ...

Isn't your place an art school? I would guess most art schools are diverse in a very uniform kind of way. But, yeah, Toronto is a very diverse city.

I teach art and design but it's not exclusively an art school. Actually, art schools are predominantly (even overwhelmingly) vanilla in my experience.

Sure it is. But you're running away from your claim. You said it's as vanilla as the rest of the state. It is not.

72% ... It is as vanilla as the rest of the state. It really is self evident. I didn't think I needed to restate the obvious. The University of Utah is not some bastion of multi-culturalism. Why are you arguing about 72%?

Race is only one dimension of diversity. The true value of diversity is in exposure to and appreciation of different backgrounds, interests, experiences, cultures, etc. This type of diversity exists everywhere, but there are extra dimensions at utah compared to byu because of nontraditional, nonmormon, and low GPA students. That was one thing I really liked about my time at the U.

I didn't attend either school. But I did grow up in the shadow of the U of U. I agree race is only one dimension of diversity, but the diversity of which you speak is scant at the U and within it's immediate surrounding communities, as compared to elsewhere. But really, the original post was about a promotional video for a sorority at the University of Alabama. The same diversity exemplified in the video could just as easily be duplicated at the U of U. Besides, Utah is new Alabama isn't it!

Roll satin warriors roll!

How can the U be as diverse as the rest of the state and still be some bastion of hippy-lesbo-liberalism per standard Provo doctrine?

This may be the most meaningless statement I've ever read on this board. It could be duplicated at the U? Of course it could. I imagine you COULD find a few dozen white girls at Tuskegee or Howard and duplicate this video there as well.

As meaningless as the statement about BYU.

And Sure, with effort—but not easily—you could do anything on any campus in the US. The point is how easy and effortlessly it would be on the U of U campus to duplicate this video. Not just visually, but matching it in tone and attitude as well. Beyond visually, could the same be said of BYU's campus? Maybe.
