I like where they have the set this time. I have always wondered why they didn't do the previous shows from President's Circle.

Good crowd.

Strong sign work.

Hackett and Phillips getting love. #KickersArePeopleToo

Ponder: One of Utah's favorite guys of all time is today's celebrity picker.

Jamal Anderson? Steve Smith? Weddle?

I don't usually watch Game Day, but the overall quality of our signs seems sub par.

I have only seen 3 so far from down in the pit. But I can only see the back of a lot of signs from here.

I agree. Some of them are pretty funny though.

The "BYU sucks" ones need to go.

Overall I think our sign game is holding up.

I'm glad to see this made an appearance. The Steve Smith Utah ties are not publicized enough since it was before Utah got on the national radar.

Stockton is a Gonzaga honk and has nothing to do with the University of Utah. On top of that he hates the limelight and rarely shows much personality. Curious and somewhat disappointing choice.

I like Stockton more than Malone, but Malone would have been a more entertaining choice.

Doesn't Jamal Anderson do some work for FoxSports? I wonder if that would be a reason to exclude him?

Andre would have been great. Same with Weddle. I guess they went with Stockton because he is well known.

I have to say, I'm a bit disappointed with the crowd volume. We showed up at 7:00, and were able to still get into the pit, and end up about 5 deep from the front.

I saw saw a few Cal fans. There were also fans in gear for Florida, Ohio State, Oklahoma, Boise St, UVU men's soccer (?!?), Weber St, and only one I saw for BYU. I'm sure there are others I'm forgetting, and some I missed seeing.

Since it was Stockton I'll share my favorite story about him. I was working for NBC during the NBA finals in 98 with the Jazz and the Bulls.

Bulls roll up in their bus and the players come rolling out in Armani suits dressed to the nines (Rodman was smoking a Sherlock Holmes pipe) with beautiful women in tow.

The game ends, camera crews hanging outside by the bus and Jazz players cars. Stockton's wife rolls in with a mini-van and goes into the Delta Center.

The Bulls leave, again dressed to the nines. Stockton comes out in a teal Izod shirt, white belt and green pants and a kid sleeping on his shoulder trying to load him in a minivan. The media surrounds him with their lights and cameras and he blows up, "YOU JUST WOKE UP MY KID!!!" The media skulks off and I've loved Stockton ever since.

Oh, and Antoine Carr drove a Pontiac Sunfire.

I'll share a Stockton story. My mom was involved with the PTA when my younger brother was in Jr High. She was in charge of putting together a 'Stay away from drugs/stay in school's type of assembly. She wanted to get a local celebrity of some kind to give the keynote. She worked her contacts and got a few phone numbers.

She called the number for John Stockton and left a message. His 'people' called back and said, 'Mr Stockton will give the talk and will be on-site for 30 minutes. No questions will be allowed, and he will not pose for photos. The cost is $5000'. (Note JS lived about 2 miles from the school and kids in his neighborhood go to this school).
The entire budget for the assembly was about $50 for decorations, and nothing else.

So next she called Thurl Bailey, and he answered the phone. She explained the situation, and he said "Sure, what time for you want me to show up?"

"Um, what do you charge?"

"What? Why would anybody need to get paid to speak with kids?

Thurl gave a great speech that lasted almost an hour, and stuck around for a few more hours talking to the kids and signing autographs. He was gracious to be asked and was generous with his time and advice.

After it was over he asked to return to speak again the next year.

Big T Bailey is good people. No other way to say it.

I had heard that Stock wouldn't even sign autographs for next door neighbor kids.

One time Karl Malone was in the parking lot at Foothill Village. My buddy asked for his autograph (which by the way I hate that, I always want to just leave those guys alone - I don't like seeing people I know in he store let alone getting accosted by random people). Anyway, he said to him, "Nope, if I sign this one then I have to sign for everyone else here..."

I was talking to a sports collector and he said some Stockton autographed stuff is more valuable than Jordan stuff because his autograph is so rare.

Stockton and his inability to be friendly to fans is the thing of legend around Salt Lake.

Ty Corbin was my neighbor when he was a player here. He was awesome. Gave me his tickets several times, played ball with the younger kids in the neighborhood (I was 16 at the time) and just an all around good guy.

Stockton and Hornacek would carpool with him sometimes to games. Hornacek would always wave. Stockton usually just stared straight ahead.

It was when Ty would be headed out for games I often got tickets. He'd see us outside and pull up if no one was using his tickets. He'd just leave them for us at will call.

I understand the autohraph thing. That would be a pain in the neck.

Karl Malone used to show up at Primary Children's Hospital with a bunch of toys and would visit sick kids, unannounced. He never wanted any publicity for it, he just wanted to make life a little brighter for sick kids.

Karl had a big heart.

Which is quite contrary to the stories of Stockton and Primary Children's.

The two guys who brought it were dressed in a corn cob costume and a police riot gear helmet. Despite all of that and the Crayola quality of the sign, the missing apostrophe was the thing that bugged me the most.
