With 2016 in the books, we might as well have a thread for 2017 recruits with they commit.

I believe we only have one guy committed right now for 2017: Ty Jones, WR out of Provo, we'll see if he's still around a year from now.

Mostly this is just a placeholder for the time being.

I will take it out of placeholder status immediately (for the time being).

Can't remember who, but some reporter tweeted yesterday that 2017 is likely the deepest, most talented high school class ever in the State of Utah. At least one of them, maybe two, has already committed to Stanford.

You know, they will be able to get an interview anywhere just based on a Stanford degree.

Swinney has been saying this. All I know of so far is Sione Heimuli-Lund who is committed to Stanford and there is a DL from Bingham who is committed to Oregon.

Another guy to watch will be John Penisini, 6'2 DT from Snow College. http://www.snowbadgers.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=1286&path=football

I looked back at the first post in the 2016 recruiting thread. As of 3/31/15 we had the following commitments:

Mica Croom, DB, La Mirada - CA, 3 Stars
Kahi Neves, QB, Salt Lake City - UT, 3 Stars
Tucker Scott, OT, San Clemente - CA, 3 Stars
Kurtis Taufa, LB, Ephraim - UT, 2 Stars
Mitch Wishnowsky, K, Santa Barbara - CA, 0 Stars

Who knows what happened to Croom. Neves signed with Arizona after Utah apparently asked him to either greyshirt or be a push forward. Scott, Wishnowsky and Taufa all signed.

Given that our QB position is still a relative unknown, it's not difficult to see how appealing it might be to play with Browning during his Junior/Senior years. It is interesting though, our homegrown talent goes elsewhere and we back fill with guys from Texas and California. Only time will tell which will win out.

Obviously, UW cannot publicly release something like this, but they can send it to the kids and the kids can do whatever they want. I eavesdropped on a conversation between some Ute staffers who were/are involved in the process of hiring a graphic design replacement for SuperDave who recently left the U for a similar position at Florida. They were saying that they asked those invited for interviews to create a poster like this one for a prospect who likes Superman and The Walking Dead.

2016 commit Semisi Lauaki received his mission call to Papua New Guinea. He doesn't report until December so he will miss three seasons, 2016, 2017 and 2018. I know it's a long way off, but he is a good kid and is looking forward to being a Ute.

In case you are not familiar with his situation, he has not had an easy life. Both of his parents died. It's a couple of years old, but here is a pretty cool story about his family.

He was a QB in high school. He will be a RB or WR. Similar to Covey. Who knows, maybe a CB. lol.

Good news! I want as many WRs as possible, even if they are from East. Maybe a redshirt year is a good thing if he's had recent trouble with the law.

Great high school player, went back to Florida to do some jail time (or something similar) and now will most likely join the Utes. He is a push forward I do believe...I'm not sure how that works. If he plays this year or is a gray shirt or has to pay his own way...But, he was a great high school player.

If he is from EHS, I am confident in saying that he was framed.

he was in my son's hs class. Had a scholie offer from WVU and elsewhere before he got in trouble in Florida. Had to go serve 90 days after graduation. Wears Ute gear all the time, wants to go to the U. couldnt be offered a scholie until he completed his sentence.

He is a little taller than Covey, much stronger in the upper body, and faster. He was lights out as an option qb last year. He had a couple of td runs against Timpview in the championship game that were amazing. he lowered his head and ran over lb's and outran the db's.

I would assume he wnt play this year but will join the team in January.

BTW, my son tells me that east this year, the entire offensive line has Pac 12 or P5 scholie offers (not sure which).

Just for clarification, he's serving time for an offense that took place in Florida in '14. He spent a year in Salt Lake living with a friend to get out of his environment that was Florida. He's kept his nose clean for the year he's already spent in Utah. I have no reservations about him being a site and am really excited about today's news.

That had me thinking of WRs we have signed in the past but never heard from. The results:

Xavier Shepherd: A three star recruit (higher than than Hampton) who never made it to Utah because of grades. His linkedin profile (https://www.linkedin.com/in/x-avier-shepherd-57410b78) (?) says he's a WR for Long Beach City College, but I checked the roster and he's not there.

Quiton Pedroza, 2011: He wasn't ranked as highly as Hampton, but he got time as a freshman and there was hope that he was a future contributor. Then, he got kicked off the team for violation of team rules, ended up at Hawaii and made all-academic MWC as a senior as well as the type of young man who desires to speak French.

This year is tough, because our recruiting class will be so small (only ~14 guys or so). What would be the goal?

I think top 25 is too ambitious, because of the size of our class.

I think if this staff can pull off a class ranked in the 30's, they've done a great job. If they can get into the lower 30's, wow. If they can get into the 20's...holy sh*%, we have turned a corner.

We currently have 23 scholarship seniors, including Tyler Cooperwood and Ken Hampel, who were awarded scholarships this Fall. A couple of those seniors, like Fitts, Fakalaiatonga and Sanders-Williams had season ending injuries and could come back next year. I think both Fakalaiatonga and Sanders-Williams both have redshirt years to use and Fitts would need to receive a medical from the NCAA. So even if we only have 20 seniors, you add the 3 guys who recently left and we are up to 23 scholies. Undoubtedly, there will be a couple more transfers and possibly as many as 3 guys who leave early for the NFL, so it appears that we will have our entire compliment of 25 scholarships available.
The more difficult number is that we are only allowed 25 initial enrollees each year. We have used several 2017 initials already in the form of push forwards - Shyne, Julian Blackmon, Bapa Falamaka and Samson Nacua. There may also be one more on a long snapper (John Alama) but I am not sure about that. That leaves us at least 20. There are 3 or 4 missionaries scheduled to return: Quinn Fabrizio LB from Alta, Chaydon Johnson K from Bingham and TJ Kautai LB from Texas. There may be one more that I am missing.
That really leaves us with about 17 or 18 initials for 2017. We can always ask kids to push forward, but that isn't always well received, particularly with higher profile recruits.

Utah
11-11-2016, 08:33 AM

Honestly, I have no clue. I'd bet that Sitake is recruiting those kids HARD.

He'd be crazy not too. With his good of a year Utah is having, and how irrelevant BYU is (especially with BYU's Nov schedule and if Utah wins out) Sitake might not have any other avenue to get really good players.

Empey probably leaves us to go play for his dad.

Finau is getting love from Sitake.

Fabrizio is on par with the bottom third of our class. So, at worst, he's as good as the twins.

Johnston was a highly rated kicker and we will need a kicker.

So, not too bad. Our real steals are the Nacua's, Lang's (if he comes), Blackmon's, and Shyne's. Those guys are very good.

This is an obvious comment, but I'll say it anyway. I believe this is the year where this new rivalry starts to take shape. For the first time in the 6 years we've been in the league together something big is on the line and someone is gonna walk out of there (likely) with the South, which will make the game next year in SLC even more important. OK, party people. Here it is, the one post of mine you look forward to every year like a dying man watching his final sunset. The list of Utah recruits!!!

So far, this year hasn't been as bloody as year's past, but there is still time. A lot of talent still on the board. We would like [/strike]some of[strike] all that talent.

1. Jay Tufele, nose tackle, Bingham. The big fella is down to us, Michigan, and Ohio State. Talk to your boy, Brian Mone, about how Utah kids do going to Michigan.
2. Chaz Ah You, safety, Timpview. With a name like that this kid looks like a Cougar. We are still on his top 11 list (!), but he has only visited Byu and UCLA so this one seems like a long shot.
3. Sione Heimuli-Lund, running back, Brighton. Stanford with their annual guy-we-could-have-used pick up. But hey, he's not a tight end!
4. Langi Tuifua, linebacker, Brighton. A former Oregon commit, he probably is the Cougars to lose.
5. LEvani Damuni, linebacker, Millville. No idea where he ends up.
6. Alden Tofa, defensive end, West Jordan. His top three are Oregon, BYU, and Ucla.
7. Tayler Katoa, linebacker, LAyton. This is the third linebacker on the list with a common theme - they don't seem to want to be Utes. Washington is in the lead, but UCLA, USC, us, and the Cougars (both of his parents are former Cougars) are in it.
8. Ty Jones, wr, Provo. Former Ute commit goes with the dawgs.
9. Michael Richardson, O-line, American Fork. A Ute! Nice to win one against most of the non-California Pac-12 schools.
10. Jordan Lolohea, DE, East. I understand linebackers not coming to Utah, but if you are a defensive end why look any where else? Between us, the Cougars, and Washington.

I don't. Linebackers should be fighting to come to Utah. We are always 2-3 LBrs away from being an elite defense, and nothing in football would be as fun as being part of an elite defense.

Deforrest Buckner may have won DPOY, but he never felt what a 3-and-out in a key situation was like. He never got to be a part of anything special as far as defense goes.

When Harbaough was here last week, he went to East to see Lolohea (and Bingham to see Jay T). I would be surprised if UM were not still in it.

Tuifua went to the Y game instead of U -Oregon, so I assume he is theirs.

And Fred Warner is fully committed to returning to BYU next year and not leave early for the NFL. Interesting wind changes in top targets according to Scout. In the last week, Eno Benjamin dropped out of the top 10 targets. I'm guessing this is mostly due to his new Texas offer. The other big mover was Ty Jones. He went from out of no where to #6. He had his official visit this last weekend, and it seems there may be some hope to flip him back to Utah.

Not true. I think just last year there was much fretting over the lack of volume and quality. Calmer voices reminded us that we had a bunch of sign-forwards (or whatever you call them), and RM's that counted against the number we could sign. There are always worries about not landing a lot of the in-state talent as well.

But where does horse shit sit on the animal feces scale?

If one were to ask me, I would put horse shit towards the top of the "if I had to handle" list. Definitely WAY above bull shit. No one should mess with mouse shit, given its propensity of hantavirus. Bird shit is a mess. Given our diets, human shit is probably one of the worst.

its a relative scale, changing from person to person.

Just last night, a bird shit on our car windshield as we were driving through the parking lot. It went splat on the passenger side right in front of my wife. She almost gagged, and told me I had to wipe it off. Windshield wipers would just smear it, so I said we would wipe it off with a napkin. She said I had to do it, she would throw-up if she had to. I commented that she had changed hundreds of dirty diapers for kids and grandkids, and asked how could this be worse than that. She said it absolutely was more gross than a diaper mess. But then, she grew up in Idaho, and actually seems to enjoy the cow shit/horse shit smell of a farm, while it makes me gag.

Totally agree with you Sancho. I was just relaying some information I've been told. Utah's been at the top of the list but I think the Williams domino needed to fall for him not to choose Nebraska. All the schools made promises to him that he'll compete/start except us because of Williams.

If I'm wrong Diehard's thought is an interesting one. I don't doubt that Chase could put on a few pounds and play linebacker. I've heard that Scalley really loves Chase at Strong Safety though and likes the flexibility Hansen has. I think he worries about losing that if they have Chase go all in on getting to a linebacker weight.

May he fail spectacularly and never see the field and get some kind of irritating STD from the song girls.

Could be enough to be worth it. Maybe change it to "from someone in the piccolo section."

This is a huge get. Huge. Kid has offers all over the place, one of which is LSU. I judge kids 100% by who offered them. Hopefully the coaches can hold onto this kid. 2018 signing day is so far away. Hopefully Jack can recruit some Wideouts along with him.

USC commit after the Utes were on him for years.
Between us, the Cougars, and Washington.[/QUOTE]

I had never heard of the kid, but his offer list and ranking suggest a QB with some serious potential. Here's hoping he sticks it out.

Former Ute commit goes with the dawgs.

also, Katoa is a USC commit and Jones is reconsidering the Utes. Tufele also considering USC, being recruited by Stevie T.

I just hope Tuttle remembers to jump with his parachute.

He's a top 200 recruit on Rivals, Scout, and 247. Top 300 on ESPN.

BTW, just for fun (and because I'm bored at work) I decided to look up the top prospects from Utah in 2012-2013 and see how their careers played out. What I learned: Utah kids should never go to the Midwest (no duh!); for other Pac-12 schools the record is hit and miss.

Hinds - went on a mission, has had two hip surgeries, and switched to tight end. So far, it hasn't gone well. I don't think he has ever caught a pass. Judgment: Supreme Bust (YEAH!)
Afalava - Played for the Huskers for two years (played is a strong word). Transferred to Weber State where he was a back up. Pretty disappointing. Judgment: Pretty Big Bust.
Fanaika - Went on a mission. Switched to the offensive line. He's a part-time starter (5 games) at guard. Judgment: Lived up to his billing.
Hansen - Went on a mission. [/strike]Transferred to BYU[strike] Got injured as a frosh. Blossomed to a pretty good safety as a sophomore. Hopeful for the future. Judgment: Damn good with super potential.
Ofahengaue - Turbulent Ute career involved two auto accidents, one DUI, a suspension from the team, and then a medical retirement. Judgment: Bustoola.
Lee - Went on a mission, came back to a Ute team that is stacked at safety. This one really did transfer to the Y. Judgment: Too soon to tell, but signs don't look good.
Houma - Was the starting fullback for a resurgent Michigan team. Also, kind of a cult-like figure in Ann Arbor. Judgment: Huge success for a three star guy.
Lindsey - A nonqualifier who went to Snow, he never made it back to the Utes. Anyone know what became of him. Judgment: Bust
Vainuku - A mission guy got hurt upon returning, so next year he will be a sophomore! Apparently he switched to O-line. Who knows what he will become. Judgment: N/A
Bird - Didn't sign anywhere that I can see. Judgment: Terrible evaluation.

P.S. #11 and #12 are Dimick the all-time Utah sacks leader, and Nick Vigil of the Cincinnati Bengals.

Bateman: The hotshot went to Alabama to pursue his dream! He got a couple of starts, but not enough. He announced recently that he is transferring. Judgment: Huge bust.
Lotulelei: From a three-star to the NFL in three years. That's Sack Lake City folks. Judgment: Superstar.
Barton: A linebacker! NOOOOOOO! He went on a mission and got some good game action this year as a sophomore. He'll be good. Judgment: Successful with chance of stardom.
Stott: This former Wildcat had seen the light and agreed to walk on to the Utes (after being tossed by RichRod). He's not listed on the roster, though. Judgment: Bust.
Fakialoatonga: The injury bug likes Siale, but when he is healthy he is the top TE for the Utes. But that's pretty rare. Judgment: With injuries, he has to be considered a disappointment.
Shumway: A freshman this year, he caught a pass against SUU! Judgment: Too early to tell (but I'm sure he will suck)
Masina: A linebacker that signed with Utah! Oh, he medically retired last year. Judgment: Bust
Taulili: Moved to the D-line. Got some playing time as a freshman, and played more regularly as a sophomore. Judgment: OK
Miles: Has played in a lot of games as a freshman, and got good run with the starters (although he didn't start) this year. Judgment: Pretty good so far for a low 3 star.
Handley: He dipped this year as a sophmore (some due to injury), but he was once again really solid. Judgment: Very good for a low 3 star.
