Religion. Every monotheistic sect has been there: Islam, Christianity and Judaism; it's their natural course unless leavened by secularism or even paganism.

As I understand it, Wahabbism and Salafism comprise about 2-3% of Islam, but they are responsible for much of the extremism.
Islam isn't exactly a bastion of live-and-let-live liberalism, but it is a very small percentage that is responsible for most of the bad.
