View Full Version : Utah vs. Arizona 2016

It seems that both teams are reeling a bit from injuries. Arizona played their 3rd string quarterback, Khalil Tate, who they were considering redshirting. The true freshman may start this week. Their tight end will play qb if the third string guy goes down.

At one point during the UCLA game, the tv showed RichRod with his head in his hands when Tate went down on the opposite sideline and was slow to get up. Runing Back Nick Wilson also went down in the game with an injury.

In the meantime, Rodriguez awoke Sunday morning with a lengthy injury report — “There’s about 28 guys on it, and 18 of them are starters,” Rodriguez said — and question marks all over the place for Saturday night’s game at Utah.

On paper, this should be a blowout. But we've got injury issues of our own, and we never truly make teams pay for their weaknesses. Fresh in our memory is last week against Cal, but remember our first bowl-less season under Kyle? We needed to beat Arizona at home, a team whose defense was atrocious away from Tucson. It gave up 54, 49 and 66 points in Pac-12 road games, and 48 against Nevada in its bowl game. Meanwhile, Utah scored 24 in a 10-point loss.

The thought of playing a 4th string center who is a walk on that was given a scholarship is a bit scary.

The unsubstantiated rumors that Troy Williams isn't practicing and may not play are even more scary. (Whit acknowledged Troy is dinged up)

It's going to be interesting just to see who we have dressed Saturday night.

The 1994 Freedom Bowl team is being honored Saturday at halftime. Maybe that's good karma because it was Arizona we beat in that game. I was there and had no idea what a great turning point that win -- and that season -- were for the program. Video clip and info here:

I was there, three! I believe that was a frat symbol--a lot of players did that during McBride's run.

I was at the freedom bowl as well. We bought tickets from scalpers that had us on the front row about 40 yard line... right in the middle of all the AZ fans. We tried not to be obnoxious but people were not pleased we were there (6 of us).

Remember the intentional safety?

I'm of the opinion that we'll realize the full importance of Lowell Lotulelie when our defense stops getting gashed like it has. This is the year to get the AZ monkey off our back and send RichRod back to the tanning beds with Trump.

I think anyone attending the game should bring a pair of cleats just in case.

Just make sure they're not Under Armour since those are what's causing all our injuries. (According to Twitter.)

I think it is dangerous for players to believe this. Too many people believe they are getting hurt because of the cleats, but the truth doesn't seem to bear that out.

Dielman's foot got stepped on, for example. No cleats would have protected him in that situation .

Looked ugly.

I only had the Jumbotron view with no replays. Did they show it on TV?

We've got to get the slow start / red zone issue off our back. Injuries are the story of the season. Glad to see us come back and gut one out in the second half.

Chase Hansen tackle that lead to the INT was amazing. Even more it was a picture perfect tackle.

One more win to bowl eligibility, although we may not be able to field a complete team by that time.

How great was that hit by Hansen, by the way?

The hit, along with the interception was the #2 play in ESPN's Top Ten plays tonight.

Looks like my going to bed in Q2 worked. :)

Read about the injuries, ouch. Although bad for the team, really feel for the players, especially JJ and Shyne.

Whit said AZ defense was calling out cadence first half and the refs said they couldn't hear it?

Officiating continued to be horrible.

Armand Shyne looked like a torn ACL. Same for UA's top LB, Ipollito.

The way injuries kept piling up I was worried every time Troy Williams kept the ball. But he did look good on the read option.

Welcome back, CBB! He was a difference maker on Offense.

Pretty funny when he made the bonehead decision for a quick kick and then chewed out whoever it was that shanked the kick.

He's always yelling angrily at his players. It's almost comical.

I honestly wonder how effective it is. Any parent knows that if you are yelling at your kids all the time, pretty soon what you have to say to them becomes just noise.

That style has a short shelf life. Todd Graham has done a lot of the high-intensity screaming, and seems to skirt the line of having players check out on him.

Whitt was pushing the buttons pretty hard last night, too, but he was *really* lighting up the refs. They really struggled last night. I'll bet a few of them are wondering this morning how much longer they'll keep going out on the stage.

Last night was kind of a perfect storm of a really bad start, embarrassing penalties, struggling officials, angry coaches, angry fans, in a big brew of adversity that the team finally overcame.

When they brought Huntley in early - when he fumbled near the goal line and we had to settle for a FG - that indicated to me any notion of keeping Troy Williams "safe" was ditched because defenses had him pegged as not being a run threat. When he was still running late in the 4th, I was starting to cringe.

Buckle up. Last night was a really strange game in a season measured in strange games. Who knows what can happen from from here.

This scene will be Michael Batlan's recurring nightmare, he may end up with PTSD.

1954

I can see the Batlan household, this Thanksgiving.

Grandson: "Hey grandpa, remember that game when you were on TV and the Utah players kept making mistakes, but their coach yelled at *you*? That was funny, huh?"

Batlan: "Jimmy, Thanksgiving is a day to give thanks for the good things we HAVE in our lives. I don't want to talk about that game. Let's talk about more positive things, like your sister's cat apparently really does have 9 lives... or at least 2 lives. And grandma is recovering nicely from the blender incident from last April, and there's no rule that says a nice looking, mature woman, like grandma, isn't still beautiful just because she only has 3 mangled fingers on her left hand."

Awesome. I love the passion.

I think every head coach in CFB is a huge asshole and difficult to work for. Lone exception is probably Bill Snyder. Everybody loves that guy.

I'm so glad that the officials got that right.
The AZ receiver pops up pretty quickly - which is a tribute to him, but also a reminder that big hits don't necessarily need to be overly dangerous ones. A targeting-style helmet hit could've really done some damage to both players.

Chase said post-game that he made the tackle just the way Scalley has taught the Ute players to tackle - using the shoulder. That made me proud.

No question Sancho. That touchdown pass he threw was a perfect throw. I thought our coverage was pretty good on the play. And we all witnessed his running abilities - speed and power. I will say that I'm grateful that it seems we have quarterbacks that will give them fits as well. Williams and Huntley are doing, and going to do, good things for the Utes.

I also thought the tweak Scalley made to the defense worked better this year against the run. He essentially brought the strong safety up to linebacker and we went with a lot of three/three and four/three looks (to my eyes). I thought after the first couple of drives we pretty much controlled their running game. They passed much better against us than I thought they would. Always something to work on.

Scalley's game plan vs Arizona was amazing. He completely changed the defense to a 3-4/3-3-5 hybrid. We ran three down linemen on most 1st and 2nd downs. It gave us the speed to spread the field with Arizona.

Also, Chase Hansen is incredible. He makes a lot of that possible.
