Back to what I had posted though...

UCLA is limping into this one at 3-4 with a real chance at missing a bowl game if they lose to us with road games @Colorado and Cal and a home date vs. USC. We cannot allow them to gain any confidence early in this one. Fumblin Joe looks good and the passing game continues to improve when it is not windy. This is a must-win if we want to contend in the south...no co-champs!

Yep. This game is pretty big. Utah is ready to have its big game (like Oregon last year).

Twitter says Tauteoli and Williams are not on the depth chart.

How many starters have missed games this season? 3 centers, 4 RBs, 1 TE, 2 WRs, 1 DE, 1 NT, 1 S, 1 LB, 1 CB. That's 15, and I'm surely missing a few.

Can we as a board agree to use first names or initials for any player with the last name of Williams? I'm assuming here it is Marcus?

Did he warm up? It looked more like he couldn't throw the ball at all so he sat down.

Even if he plays, he won't last long. We are by far the best team at getting pressure on the QB.

I'm not sure what you're asking. Yes, he was dressed and passed the ball in an attempt to warm up. Either he felt or some coach felt that he couldn't go, so he sat. To expect him to be out one week after seeing if he could go is, imo, unwise.

On the other hand, nobody makes backup QBs look better than Utah - for whatever reason.
It's like when Terry Teagle as a Laker used to go off for 40 against the Jazz about once a year, and then revert to ordinary for every other game.
It's all a mystery to me.

No problem. I guess I was asking if you saw him warm up. It was not pretty. He was in a TON of pain. He wasn't anywhere close to being ready to play. Then, you throw in the fact that our DL/defense is light years the best at hitting the QB in the PAC-12 and his OL/run game is atrocious...

Also, UCLA is not a good team. They will be lucky to go bowling. Look at it this way: if Rosen is 60% against Utah, and you know Utah will hit him a TON, do you play him?

Or, do you sit him, try to get him to 75-80% for Colorado? Because that Colorado game may be the difference between you going bowling or staying home in December.

UCLA is not a good team right now. Yeah, they are talented, and they are more talented than Utah, even with the injuries, but this isn't basketball. Utah should win this game.

On 1280 this morning, Lincoln Kennedy was asked what UCLA needs to do to beat Utah. He laughed and said, "pray for a miracle".

Utah's problem is not beating UCLA. It is not looking ahead to Washington, starting slow, and allowing UCLA to get confidence and giving UCLA hope.

How different would our offense be this year if we had been able to hold onto Darnold, Marks and Stovall? With Patrick and Butler-Byrd? Yikes. I'd bet ARod would be a genius.

I forgot he was a Utah commit. Unfortunately he made the right choice at the time. He would have 37 catches for 600 yards and 2 TDs in 4 years playing at Utah, instead of the 267/2900/30 (and counting) at WSU.

I am holding out hope that Tyquez Hampton will be the WR who WSU wishes they had.

All of those players, at their current level of development, puts us in the driver seat last year for a probable Rose Bowl. And possibly the CFP this year.

Yeah. When you remember that the betting line is set to get bets on both sides, I'd bet that it will be pick 'em unless it comes out that Rosen is playing, then UCLA by 4-6.

That is a good point. UCLA has a bye after Utah so they could look at it as a chance to sit Rosen and hope to have him fully healthy for the final four games after the bye.

However, those four games are @Colorado (likely loss), Oregon State (win), USC (who knows, but I believe USC would be favored if that game were this week--even with a healthy Rosen) and @Cal (UCLA is probably favored in that but it won't be easy). So they may look at it and feel that if they are getting to six wins they NEED to beat Utah and will therefore take their chances with an 80% Rosen. I've never really gotten the sense that Mora is the type of coach who would let a player's well-being get in the way of him winning games.

UCLA's defense is legit and I'm not sure where we will find sustained success against them. Their offense, even with Rosen, has been very pedestrian. I expect a low scoring game that could go either way.

Utah
10-18-2016, 01:49 PM
I think UCLA's chances to win:

Pretty close to zero - USC
25% - Utah (especially if Rosen is beat up)
50% - Colorado (higher if Rosen is healthy)
60% - Cal (80% with a healthy Rosen)
95% - OSU

I think Colorado is still overrated. Their two losses were vs Michigan and USC...two teams that are equals to Utah and UCLA stylistically.

And, USC was -3 in the TO'S and still won.

I'd sit Rosen and get him healthy.

If you play Rosen vs Utah, he will get hit and hit a lot. You probably lose anyways, and if Rosen gets hurt, you aren't going bowling.

Heck, if Rosen is healthy, you have a shot at a "rivalry game anything can happen" win and a 4 game win streak to end the year.

Utah
10-18-2016, 01:51 PM
Also, about Colorado, the two good teams they've played have destroyed them. Michigan was soft to start, but took them to the woodshed and USC destroyed Colorado...but kept turning the ball over.

I think we beat a 6 to 7 win Colorado easier than a 3 win Colorado. It's what we do.

I've never understood why our DBs try to trip receivers up instead of wrapping them up -- especially when the receiver is close to a first down and just needs to fall forward to get it.

I'm still going to call him Fumblin' Joe, but he's Diamond Joe in my heart.

Once again Utah attempts to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory. 1 play from 8-0.

There are certain types of teams that can just cut up our defense and UCLA is one of them (Wazzu is another). We see this every year.

I'll say our run defense is elite, the rest is pretty pedestrian. We rely on the d-line to save our secondary.

What a crazy, unexpected journey for Sweet Joe. I know opponents are banged up, but that's the burst we all hoped to see coming into this year.

If he just needed 5 weeks of recharging his batteries... no argument, from me!

The blocking schemes and execution were brilliant.

On the defensive side, I think it was a matter of us not anticipating that they'd throw the ball 70 times, and some shitty tackling, even from guys like Chase Hansen.

On the officiating, we dodged a bullet on what should have been targeting on C Barton, but they took off a TD on a phantom chop block, so it worked out.

Troy Williams just doesn't get rattled. It was Joe's day, and Troy didn't have his best game, but he's been steady, and he delivers a nice ball downfield. The first play to Siosi Wilson was beautiful.

College football is a crazy game. But we're 7-1, and we'll get amped up for the Huskies, and then get a break.

I really believe that if we could put together four quarters of focused, relatively mistake-free football (meaning really stupid and costly mistakes), we could beat anyone in our conference, and a great many others outside of it.

As Whit noted, one thing that makes what Joe did so cool is he did it in the Rose Bowl against UCLA. It wasn't the old WAC or MWC in which Joe got those yards.

Some fascinating insight into what UCLA did this week, and how it impacted us in the game:

They basically decided to abandon the run, and go with a pass-heavy approach, which worked pretty impressively. We were prepped for stopping the ground game, and then got caught in a hail of passes.

Even more impressive was UCLA only allowed 2 sacks, though we got really good pressure on Fafaul on a lot of plays. Brian Allen had 2 picks, and also blew a play where he went for the strip and missed, and his guy scored, from 75 out.

What a marathon. The broadcast went 4 hours. We were fortunate to have the shade side of the field.

I'm glad we were playing guys like Havili-Katoa, Anae and Leki Futo (who at 6-5 / 300 with the long hair is reminiscent of Talavou and Soliai, aka "Thing One and Thing Two").

The D really needs to recharge. We're going to have to play a LOT of guys on Saturday. I hope Shah has Blackmon, and possibly even Tyrell Burgess completely understood that they need to be ready. And if there's any chance we can get Marcus Williams back, yesterday's investment in Fogal will pay off, because I expect another aerial circus.

Scalley needs to dust off the defensive playbooks from the past 2 decades to find some pressure packages we haven't shown.

"Fumblin' Joe" sounds too much like a racist nickname. It reeks of the soft bigotry of low expectations, as though there is some kind of mental deficiency present.

Mighty Joe Williams finally had his amazing breakout game. He was nails all game, and he finally got a chance to showcase his true breakaway speed.

The O Line put things together and were unstoppable on run blocking. The left side of the line (Bolles and Asiata) were beasts. They were NFL-caliber yesterday.

When Joe stepped away, my boys picked up on my being a little down on him for quitting and the way he ran the ball the first two games of the season. "Wussy Joe" was said more than once as I referred to him in conversations. Last week, my youngest son asked me if Joe could win the Heisman after running so well against OSU. I told them it was impossible. By halftime yesterday, they were referring to him as "Heisman Joe."

Good hell. Seriously not everything is racist and if we are thinking that way how is "Mighty Joe" any better? This sort of thinking can't get any more stupid.

I can honestly say that his race never even dawned on me (and likely anyone else here) and I'd be equally comfortable and likely to use that nickname for Joe Kruger had he dropped the ball 4x in three games.

Yesterday I heard myself saying "Go, Joe, go!" over and over. He will be fun to watch. We need to find an alliterative nickname for him, something like Automatic Andy. How about Jetstream Joe? Jettin' Joe?

Edit: I'm pretty sure I started the fumblin' joe thing. I haven't decided yet if I'm going to abandon it. I like all nicknames with Joe. Diamond Joe, Joe the Show, Fumblin' Joe. Joe is just a really great name.

You did come up with it and I must say you are pretty racist Sancho for starting that... someone has to say it.

Joking aside, it is just a funny nickname particularly because of how awesome he is doing. It is like calling a center Tiny or something.

We started calling him Diamond Joe during the game.

I like the Rose Bowl. It's a much better, more pleasant venue than the Coliseum. (The seats don't leave any more legroom than he Coliseum does, however.) inalso was reminded that west side seats are much better.

The Ute fan representation was excellent. I wasn't in the Utah section but that big block of red was very loud and must have been over 5,000 strong. It was a pleasure to watch the team run over to that section and sing "Utah Man."
