View Full Version : Time to Stomp The Sun Devils, 2016

Let's get this one going. The Utes are due to beat a PAC-12 opponent soundly, and it might as well be ASU, on the Sun Devils' home field. Let the thread begin. May Todd Graham be left with nightmares.

Our pass defense can make most qb's look pretty good. (Partly TIC)

ASU is 5-4 and faces us, Washington, and Arizona down the stretch. This is their last home game of the season and they too have a bye, so the motivation will be plentiful for the Sun Devils. This could be another 300+ yard game for Joe Williams. I think if we can just avoid big momentum shifting mistakes, we should be able to win this one. Stranger things have happened, but I'm hopeful that all the frustration of the UW loss will fuel this team for the next 10 days or so.

Agreed. I am sure they will watch the UW game video and not only get angry at themselves over how close they came, but also get super-motivated for the same reason.

Grumblin' Joe's stats have been unbelievable. If he pulls a 200+ yard game against ASU you got to believe he is a lock for the NFL. What a story that would be...

ASU beat Utah 11 straight times dating back to 1977 until last year when the good guys prevailed in SLC. They have visiting teams facing the press box - unlike nearly every other program in the nation - so they can steal signs. It isn't illegal but it is low.

If ASU becomes bowl eligible, let it be after Thursday.

This game should have Harding and A-Rod salivating, not just because the Devils are beat up and the subs have struggled with assignments, but because ASU was ripping off our signs last year... AT OUR HOUSE.

They'll be expecting us to play mashball, and if that works... I don't care, just win.

But if they're expecting us to smack them, why not let Troy and the receivers get some big chunk yardage early, so we can play smashmouth in the 2nd half, see how close to a real 3 hour telecast we can get?

Dwight Schr-Ute

Why do you all think that we're going to be able to rush all over ASU? Don't they have one of the stiffer rushing defenses in the conference? I know that Whittingham even made some comment about it in today's press conference about how their loading the box to sustain their love of blitzing makes it harder to run on them. It's the awful passing defense where teams have managed the most success against them. Most recently with Oregon's freshman QB being able to torch them for nearly 500 yards.

Also saw a note that ASU expects to have about half of their injured players back for this game. Including their starting QB. I haven't paid enough attention to them to know what this means for us, but something to make note of.

Also, the line came out yesterday as Utah -5.5.

The way I'm wired, based on history I've lived through, it will never be easy for us in Tempe; it will never be easy for us in the desert. To make matters worse, they're just bad people down there, the coaches, the fans, all of them. I'd be thrilled with a one point victory.

We'll be ready, but I agree this could be a real slugfest.

It's true ASU's defense has been adept at stopping the run. Last year when they were picking off signals, they were stuffing every single run attempt. I wouldn't put it past Graham and his crew to counter the portable curtains opposing offenses use to shield signals with video cameras on the opponent's side, up high.

If we can get their defense to crack, great, and I hope Joe the Show has another great performance. But this game may be the time for our other two Williams to shine - Troy and Marcus.

Get the win, and get a couple of extra days to heal up for Oregon.

Game day! Arizona is warm and sunny, so that's good luck.

Utah
11-10-2016, 10:07 AM
ASU will bring the heat. They will try to stop the run and hit Troy. This game will come down to ARod going back to his MWC days, pulling out the Jerome Brooks-quick toss to the WR plays. Let Butler-Byrd get the ball in space and make something happen. So some quick slants with Patrick. Maybe even a couple max protect, two route pass plays where we send B-B across the middle of the field and Patrick on a post route. We can/should beat them easily, but this is the type of game (see Arizona last year) where we seem to let a vastly inferior team stick around.

And Scalley needs to dust off the Arizona game plan. He was fantastic vs Arizona. Do that again. Do the 3 down linemen-hybrid defense again. Let Pita T play some OLB, where he is much better rushing the QB.

I'm so freaking glad there is football tonight. It feels like it has been forever.

We kicked ASU's ass. When they ran their second trick play, they waved the white flag. They knew they couldn't beat us straight up.

Take away an early turnover, make another tackle or two and this is a prison rape no different than last year's game at Oregon. The final score doesn't do this effort justice.

We kicked ASU's ass. When they ran their second trick play, they waved the white flag. They knew they couldn't beat us straight up.

I was thinking this same thing last night (minus the prison rape) but if we don't dig ourselves into a hole like we seem to do this is an epic shellacking. The first quarter was awful and by all means we should have been down 21 - 0 instead of 13 - 0. As usual I worry about of defense but then usually the box score at the end of the game shows that we did some remarkable things. People were shouting about Scalley continuing to rush but obviously our scouting said we'd win if we spent the evening in their backfield and we did. I suppose they did it at the expense of knowing they'd break off the occasional big play.

I used to sit by a guy at games who I thought was a great football mind. He was good to point out to me the chess match that football really is. Good coaches sometimes will sacrifice one thing to exploit another and I think that is what happened last night on D.

Satisfying to win it convincingly, let's do it again against the Ducks and pray that CO plays us like they did UCLA and we run away with the P12 South.

My issue with the blitzing on third down is we didn't need it. We were destroying them with 3-5 rushing. Bringing 6-7 on third and long is the only time they burned us in the second half.

I agree. This was a one-sided game.
It's amazing how far the Utes have come in 5 years (or, maybe how far ASU has slipped? - probably a little of both).

Really terrific the way our young receivers (except Tyrone Smith) have stepped up. Bodes well for next year.

I'm pretty sure Smith's arm has been a bigger hinderance than has been let on.

This. Smith was great before the injury. Smith will be great next year as well.

A game like this really emphasizes how grateful I am to have KW leading this program. In the first quarter we showed up to a knife fight with a plastic spoon, and yet I wasn't too worried. I simply changed my seating position on the couch, and my son went upstairs to watch -- oh yeah, and KW made his adjustments too. I know Utah can attract a quality HC when KW decides to hang them up, but, I'm not naive enough to believe I'm not watching a master in action. He's a top 15 coach -- the guy is special -- you could see that in spades during last year's P12 "The Drive". He has that special presence that, for example, Anderson and Sitake just doesn't have IMO.

I liked his interview. Seemed just like a country kid trying not to draw attention to himself.
Reminded me a little of Ricky Bobby trying to decide what to do with his hands on camera.

Utah is one win away (against Colorado) from sweeping the South. Just think on that for awhile.
