Their coach got fired and they have an interim coach. This will be the third year in a row where Utah is playing a team in a bowl game where their coaching staff is in flux.

That pretty much sums it up.

As always, one great thing about bowl games is that they give the team and the coaches several extra weeks of practice, and in effect to get an extra few weeks of spring ball in. Maybe Kyle and the assistant coaches (to whom he does not listen at all, according to SU) can work on some things in the offense. Red zone efficiency comes to mind, for example.

Most of their games they won close (save FIU 34-13):

Ball St - 10
MSU - 3
Maryland - 6
Rutgers - 6
Purdue - 2

Their QB has thrown for 3100 yards and has 18 TDs and 16 Ints.

They've got a WR that has 915 Yards and 5 TDs

I expect Kyle to be 10-1 in Bowl games coming out of the FF Bowl.

I'm pretty excited about the bowl game. I like playing Big 10 teams. It makes me nostalgic for the annual Pac-12/Big10 challenge that almost happened. Sure glad we got to see USC play Notre Dame this year instead of having that amazing scheduling arrangement.

This is a link to a one-hour recording of the PSU @ Indiana game. Ind had them 24-14 with a minute or so left in the 3rd. They self destructed, gave up 24 in the 4th, and lost 45-31. They're good. Their freshman CB got torched bad.

The keys to this game are the same as the keys to every game this season:

1) Big plays. Our offensive success, when it has come, comes on big plays. It's a gambler's offense. We'll go long on 1st and 10 multiple times in this game. The big plays from Joe are a bonus that we relied on a lot in the middle of the season.

2) Interceptions. We got these when we won. We didn't get these in games we lost.

3) Convert on 3rd/4th and 1. We came up short on key short yardage situations against Cal, Oregon, and CU. We converted those in our wins (in particular against USC).

4) Red zone. Goes without saying.

Hard to disagree with any of those points. Add ball security and you have a complete list.

I've never been to one of the tailgate parties, but I feel like San Fransisco can offer some pretty good things to do and some far superior food. I think I'd try to take advantage of that.

The last one we went to was the Fiesta Bowl in 2005. It was so disappointing, we haven't tried another since. I hope they have improved them in the past 12 years. But I agree with Sancho, if you want to spend $40 on a pregame meal, there are better places in the Bay Area. If you are looking for Ute-themed festivities along with mediocre food, and not have to travel an hour after eating to get to the game, it might be worth it.

Not only did it suck,we travelled halfway across Maricopa County to get there, it was so out of the way from Tempe.

I haven't read any of this thread's posts, so forgive me if I'm repeating some stuff.

What a great game! Close, exciting, and we made the plays when we had to. There is no story in college football that comes close to Joe Williams this season. Not close. His run to set up the game winning FG was an all time Utah highlight. It's just wonderful for him to go out like that. I wish we had taken a timeout after that play to rest him enough for three carries. I would have loved for him to have a shot at the endzone there.

I want Wilson's block in gif form. Simpkins and Wilson are the #1 and #2 WRs next season, and I'm excited to see them.

I really wanted that dwarf DB for Indiana to get his at some point in the game. Too bad.

What Whittingham has done in bowl games is absolutely incredible. The lifetime contract has to happen.

I don't have a lot of confidence in Troy Williams right now, which I didn't think I would be saying at the 6 game mark this season. But he did complete that huge pass on the game winning drive after the holding call.

I hope our juniors come back. I don't understand how Marcus is a top draft pick. I know he's good, and I know he has the size, speed, etc, but he's just not a game changing safety. Guys like Weddle or Eric Berry or Earl Thomas were huge difference makers for their college teams. Williams is important to us, but he doesn't impact the game on the same scale with those guys. If I'm drafting a safety in the 1st round, I better see that level of impact.

I did not like our clock management at the end of the first half, and I did not like the back-to-back read options called in the 4th.

Our run game in the 4th! Amazing. If not for two fumbles in that quarter, we end up winning by 14 points. I guess we wore them out or something.

Anyway, great end to another fun season. Utah football has now finished ranked for three consecutive seasons. Think about that. Not many teams can say that. Let's finish it by landing our remaining recruiting targets!

I suspect the coaches have some doubts too. Maybe they were sending Troy a message by putting in the Huntley packages.

Indiana was as determined as a bowl opponent can be. Credit to their coaches for coaching that team up as high as they could. Wow.

A great team effort. Phillips, Joe, Dimick, Taumoepenu, Tasini, Asiata, Dielman... all the Seniors go out winners, as they are.

Phillips' third FG was freakish. You see FGs in the NFL wander around like a knuckleball, but rarely do you see *that*. That one was up there with a Wyoming PAT I saw about 8 years ago in the New Mexico Bowl that hit *BOTH* uprights, and fell in.

A lot of rebuilding to do, but hard to call 9-4 in the PAC-12 a bad year. Really good to see Fulks, Moss, and Huntley be integral to the win. (And for Fulks, some redemption for the pathetic start.)

I read somewhere that Mitch Wishnowsky placed the ball wrong so that Andy kicked it on the laces. Fortunately, it worked out. The kick kind of looked like a knuckleball pitch as it floated toward the goal post. We actually came pretty close to a real disaster on that kick.

Andy kicked it on the laces.

He did. I noticed that on the replay.

I was really encouraged what I saw from the LBs last night. Hopefully that position really improves next season.

Luafatasaga is a beast. One of the first plays I saw him in this year I saw him clean up a pile at the sideline and I thought, based on his size, that it was a DE. He is turning into a monster. Him and Tauteoli look to be good next year.

I think we finally have P12 LBs

I found the Wyoming PAT that hit both uprights, from NM Bowl 2011: http://1045theteam.com/wyoming-extra-point-hits-both-goal-posts-video/

None of us will see one of those again. The odds have to be one in 100,000.

The catch that led to the PAT was pretty remarkable too. That's awesome.

Yeah, it took a full season, but we finally have starting quality linebackers in the Pac-12 (although no depth).

Despite losing a few key players I predict we are going to be better across the board than last year. Troy Williams will improve markedly over the summer along with our WR crew. LBs will be where they need to be as well.

Replacing all those db's is going to be a huge challenge. We wont have any corners with any meaning ful experience, and likely only one safety. That is a lot of new faces to get on the same page quickly.

Corners can usually come up to speed more quickly than safeties. Playing CB in the Utah defense is primarily about talent, and technique. Julian Blackmon looked like a true freshman out there, similar to what Marcus Williams looked like as a true frosh playing FS. I'm encouraged by Blackmon, Tyrell Burgess, Nygel King, and guys I can't name off the top of my head.

I would invest $100 today in Tyrone Smith being the next Brian Allen / Keith McGill / hell, maybe even the next Sean Smith... ie, the next big Utah CB. We've got a pipeline going with big corners.

I'm bummed about the seniors we lose, but time moves forward. We'll be fine, and it will be fun to watch the next crop.

I hope your right. I hope we hold onto Evans and Johnson, too.

I agree with concerned. It would be nice to have AT LEAST one experienced db back. Boobie and Julian Blackmon haven't really impressed me this year. They are young so thyere is always room to develop, but right now the dbs are a concern. I would be worried about the d-line as well (losing Dimick, Pita T, Tasini, and likely Lotulelei) but I agreed to never doubt a Whittingham D-line.

Lotulelei was wanting to return per Whitt last week.

We also get Fitts back

Really? So let's say these are the odds for players leaving early:

Lowell: 50/50
Marcus: 90% chance he's gone
Bolles: 45% chance
Some random player with no chance of getting drafted: 20%

I think Lowell is coming back.

I am not nearly as certain Williams is leaving either.

Reeeeaaaally enjoyed our time at the bowl game. Great food, decent weather, and a rare one-on-one getaway with my wife. Plus you couldn't ask for a better outcome.

Having said that, here are my 3 festivus grievances. 1. $50 to park. There had to be cheaper parking available, but, I followed the signs, so..... 2. First restaurant I visited in Sonoma didn't serve diet coke because it wasn't a "healthy alternative". Come on Cali comrads....you're better than that. 3. The knucklehead behind me must've been utefans.net royalty cuz he thought he had a handle on every minutia of the game. Joe's 3rd and 18 first down run shut him up for 3 or 4 plays though. Thank you Rumblin' Joe!

We parked at the Mountain View train station for 5 bucks, and spent 4 bucks each for four trip train tickets. The train scene there is very organized, i'm sure tons of people's le use them for 49'ers games.

I'm pretty sure I the wasn't the guy sitting behind you. Joe William's run had me up and yelling. Not sure what kind of "fan" would be silenced by that. Crazy how some people would rather be right and miserable than wrong and happy.
