I will start. Why do baseball managers insist on bunting a runner over into scoring position, but opening first base for the opposing pitcher to internationally walk their best hitter? Basically wasting two at bats in the middle of you're lineup.

For the same reasons that football coaches generally go for it on 4th down far less than they should.

1. Tradition
2. Idiots in the media (Skip Bayless types) will yell at them if they do anything unconventional and it doesn't work. No one yells if they go by conventional wisdom.

Has anyone ever stayed in a hotel that lost electric power in all the guest rooms? I did last night. A surreal, frustrating experience, especially when you have work to do and need the wi-fi. It's 6:30 a.m. now and still no power. The hotel gave all the guests light sticks so we could see around our rooms a little bit.

Actually we were the lucky ones compared to others. As soon as the power went out the Edison shut off its water. The Marriott Marquis across the street figured that it was a temporary outage and left their water on for somewhere around 2-3 hours. While we were eating in the restaurant at about 6:30 when we noticed guests and staff at the Marriott hauling mattresses, bags & belongings into the parking area. Apparently the Marriott had drawn its water tank below the level FDNY requires for fire protection and ordered the building evacuated.

It was maybe the most surreal time I've ever spent. Walking around Times Square with only generator powered floodlights looking up at a totally dark Empire State Building. Weird.

It's about manufacturing runs. A botched play on the bunt puts runners at 1st and 2nd with one of the better hitters up next; a throwing error puts 2 runners in scoring position at 2nd and 3rd; an intentional walk creates a double play chance for the defense, but now there are 2 runs on an extra base hit (unless the guy on 1st runs like Hrbek).

French Unions.

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/finance/financialcrisis/9882422/US-boss-berates-French-for-three-hour-working-day.html

Maurice Taylor, chief executive of Titan, berated the French work ethic in response to a request for the US company to consider investing in a loss-making Goodyear plant in Amiens, northern France, in an attack which has infuriated unions.

"I have visited that factory a couple of times. The French workforce gets paid high wages but only works three hours," Mr Taylor wrote in a letter to Arnaud Montebourg, French Industrial Renewal Minister, dated February 8 and obtained by French business daily Les Echos (http://www.lesechos.fr/economie-politique/france/document/0202577006715-goodyear-la-lettre-de-titan-a-montebourg-540115.php).

"They get one hour for breaks and lunch, talk for three and work for three. I told this to the French union workers to their faces. They told me that's the French way!"

Goodyear said last month it planned on closing the plant, which employs 1,173 workers, following five years of failed talks with unions.

Mr Taylor said Titan had a long history of buying and turning around troubled factories but in this instance was not in any way interested.

Why is his being a bishop in the LDS church important to that story?

The versions out this morning never mentioned anything about it, so obviously someone has called the media to ensure they know. Kind of curious as to why (its a local cultural thing that I don't understand as I really don't care what religion someone is)

That's my thought. But I also couldn't tell you who was a Presbyterian athlete or politician either. Never mattered.

As for the headline, don't know KSL and the Tribune don't have it in the headline (The tribune has added it to the body of the story, it was not there this morning)

Seems the local Fox affiliate is the one with the headline, and has made him the focus of the story. Ratings I guess? ;)

I just remembered that over 31 years ago when my wife and I were contemplating marriage, we sat on the Park Building steps and speculated about what names we liked for kids. We both liked Benjamin for our first-born son, if we had a son. We imagined together that maybe someday Ben would even graduate from the U. Well, his name did turn out to be Benjamin, and today is that day. Quite a feeling.

While I like his work, the volume the Trib prints is quite low. We're getting very little coverage this off season, and it's been very generic.

Speaking of media, it seems the Tribune in its push to quickly put articles online has given up on proof reading and quality control.

Today's example, a story about a fatal traffic accident which says the "Victim in I-15 crash near Lambs Canyon identified"

Anyone who's somewhat familiar with Utah should know Lambs Canyon is 5 miles up Parleys Canyon on I-80. It's listed as I-15 in the body of the article as well.

I wish the media would worry less about being first and more about being correct

I think this is true of the comment section for every newspaper. For some reason the people drawn to participate in the comment section of newspapers seem to be complete idiots.

Researchers from the California Institute of Technology recently studied that effect by giving 99 study participants 15 minutes of transcranial direct current stimulation, or TDCS, an electrode-based, non-invasive way of juicing the brain. (A company is also marketing TDCS as a very sketchy means of getting better at video games (http://www.popsci.com/gadgets/article/2013-05/sketchy-headset-will-zap-gamers-brains-give-them-better-reflexes).) The participants got an fMRI scan before and after the brain shock, and were shown faces while in the fMRI machine. After the zapping, the participants rated the faces as more attractive....

I saw the Batman tail lights on a truck here in the valley a couple of years ago. He had a whole batman theme going on... except for the vehicle itself was a piece of junk flatbed truck instead of a kickass Batmobile. But you have to start somewhere I suppose.

Come to think of it, I would see that guy and his truck regularly on the freeway, and I haven't seen him recently.

This is where I explain the complexity of various names I will call people here from time to time. I do this as a completely good-natured joke, and love to get responses in kind.

First is designation as a WFB (warthog-faced buffoon). It is actually an honorific, but only in an odd way. When someone I like answers one of my posts in such a manner as to leave me cornered (for example, pointing out an undeniable error on my part, or a point I have simply lost; or makes me laugh; or is just a good sport about something; or simply makes a good, eye-opening point) I resort to the only honorable response left to me: Call the bounder a warthog-faced buffoon.

867

If the same WFB catches me a second time, he is designated a miserable, vomitous mass, or "MVM."*

Most of you have not nailed me yet. Even if you do, it sometimes takes a while for me to admit that.

This is where I explain the complexity to the theme of the various videos that I post in the random chat thread...

First is the obvious nature of the random chat involved.

Second, they probably involve women... and the reason for this is simple, when I am personally involved in random chat it often involves the subject of women.

Most of you probably didn't realize this... and frankly, I'm not surprised.

My wife is really getting into computery things where such a device could help. So, I thought it might make a nice christmas present.
Tons of them on Amazon, but I'm not familiar with the options, and what is most desirable. She enjoys computer art, drawing, photo editing, etc.

Question on graph/chart tools. I'm working on a paper where I need to show a pretty complicated relationship between a lot of data. Excel and Numbers are just not easy to use in this instance.
Any recommendations on tools for making "Power Graphs" ?

Brian
12-06-2013, 08:16 AM
I think we would need to know more. If you can describe what you would like to see, maybe someone will know a tool to generate it.

In general, make every effort to simplify the presentation of data to the point where a line/bar/pie chart will work. I read a lot of papers where data is presented in very complicated ways, and I usually skip over the plot rather than spend 15 minuets trying to figure out what it shows. What is the conclusion you want people to draw from the data? Is there a way to simply present it so that people can see that conclusion? It's not always possible, but when it is, the paper is more elegant.

Of course, in many papers (academic papers in particular), readability is not the goal, and maybe that's the case here.

Yes, it's an academic paper. Readability is certainly a goal, however, I'm trying to do more. I have 5 dimensional data that I'm trying to understand. The first goal is for me to understand patterns and relationships, identifying which dimensions matter, and under what circumstances. The second is then to present these relationships in a readable way to the intended audience. The audience is pretty sophisticated, so a complex presentation is fine, as long as it's clear. Parallel coordinates plots are pretty good at this kind of thing, but they aren't showing everything as easily as I'd like.

Currently, I'm making a table of charts, essentially breaking it up the 5D data into a set of lower-dimensional charts. This is helpful, and is showing some of the patterns I've found, but I want to explore what else is available.

Excel/Numbers is great for simple stuff, but not for this.

genomics is a good guess, but this is for the analysis of algorithm scalability.

I've taught a lot of cops now through the years. The chief of police of my town was my student and he's a millpond and a consummate gentleman. I think four of the city's officers are my former students. One of them has the 1,000 yard stare now. The others are coping well with the job. That's one of the reasons in Utah (and many other states) Officers had retirement at 20 years.

While we still have it in Utah, 50% of your highest years salary for those hired prior to July 2011, the changes to things like health insurance have made retiring at 20 years difficult.

All that being said, 95% of officers are great people who do great work. Like any job there are some idiots.

I will say at least in Utah the changes to retirement and benefits have made it much harder to attract good candidates. (Those hired after July 2011 cannot retire until 25 years and at that point would receive 37% of their highest salary, which in Utah equal $22,000 or so for the best paid officers)

And as for sabbaticals, while that would be awesome, it's impossible.

Someone has to cover for an officer who is off. Departments have a certain staffing number that always have to be at work, so only a certain percentage of officers can be off at any given time. There's no calling someone else in to cover

And since it takes roughly 12-18 months to hire, train and certify an officer to work on their own, departments are always understaffed.

And all that being said, I wouldn't do anything else. It's the greatest job in the world.

I'm in a field with years and years of training, roughly 11-12 years to be able to do what I do. Sabbaticals are built in to the rotation, so that if you earn one (they're not automatic where I work), then there's a way to cover. If a police force knew there would be a sabbatical, I imagine that it could be done. However, I realize I'm arguing about nothing here, since I don't know of any police force that does it. A 37% pension is not good for recruiting your best and brightest. But, Utah can boast of low taxes!

The Doctor asks: "What's the problem?

The woman says: "Doctor, I don't know what to do. Every day my husband seems to lose his temper for no reason, and it scares me."

The Doctor says: "I have a cure for that. When it seems that your husband is
getting angry, just take a glass of water and start swishing it in your
mouth. Just swish and swish but don't swallow it until he either leaves the
room or goes to bed and falls asleep."

Two weeks later the woman comes back to the doctor, looking fresh and reborn.

The woman says: "Doctor that was a brilliant idea! Every time my husband
started losing it, I swished with water. I swished and swished, and he
calmed right down! How does a glass of water do that?"

The Doctor says: "The water itself does nothing. It's keeping your mouth shut that does the trick

I said, "Definitely! Most tables would have collapsed by now."

I was in a pub Saturday night nursing a brew when I noticed two stout women at the bar.

Internet Trolls Really Are Horrible People (http://www.slate.com/articles/health_and_science/climate_desk/2014/02/internet_troll_personality_study_machiavellianism_ narcissism_psychopathy.html)Narcissistic, Machiavellian, psychopathic, and sadistic.

In the past few years, the science of Internet trollology has made some strides. Last year, for instance, we learned (http://www.motherjones.com/environment/2013/01/you-idiot-course-trolls-comments-make-you-believe-science-less) that by hurling insults and inciting discord in online comment sections, so-called Internet trolls (who are frequently anonymous) have a polarizing effect on audiences, leading to politicization, rather than deeper understanding of scientific topics.

That’s bad, but it’s nothing compared with what a new psychology paper (http://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0191886914000324) has to say about the personalities of trolls themselves. The research, conducted by Erin Buckels of the University of Manitoba and two colleagues, sought to directly investigate whether people who engage in trolling are characterized by personality traits that fall in the so-called Dark Tetrad: Machiavellianism (willingness to manipulate and deceive others), narcissism (egotism and self-obsession), psychopathy (the lack of remorse and empathy), and sadism (pleasure in the suffering of others).

It is hard to underplay the results: The study found correlations, sometimes quite significant, between these traits and trolling behavior. What’s more, it also found a relationship between all Dark Tetrad traits (except for narcissism) and the overall time that an individual spent, per day, commenting on the Internet....

A strange story in which the Cival War paused while two men fought with their fists. (http://www.nps.gov/history/history/online_books/civil_war_series/25/sec3.htm#3)

In the confused swirl of combat at Saunders Field, the fighting sometimes took on a peculiarly personal tone. John Worsham of the Twenty-first Virginia Infantry described one such encounter in his book, One of Jackson's Foot Cavalry.

"Running midway across the little field was a gully that had been washed by the rains. In their retreat many of the enemy went into this gully for protection from our fire. When we advanced to it, we ordered them out and to the rear. All came out except one, who had hidden under an overhanging bank and was overlooked. When we fell back across the field, the Yankees who followed us to the edge of the woods shot at us as we crossed. One of our men, thinking the fire too warm, dropped into the gully for protection. Now there was a Yankee and a Confederate in the gully—and each was ignorant of the presence of the other!

After awhile they commenced to move about in the gully, there being no danger so long as they did not show themselves. Soon they came in view of each other, and they commenced to banter. Then they decided that they would go into the road and have a regular fist and skull fight, the best man to have the other as his prisoner. While both sides were firing, the two men came into the road about midway between the lines of battle, and in full view of both sides around the field. They surely created a commotion, because both sides ceased firing! When the two men took off their coats and commenced to fight with their fists, a yell went up along each line, and men rushed to the edge of the opening for a better view! The 'Johnny' soon had the 'Yank' down; the Yank surrendered, and both quietly rolled into the gully. Here they remained until nightfall, when the 'Johnny' brought the Yankee into our line. In the meantime, the disappearance of the two men into the gully was the signal for the resumption of firing. Such is war!"

For anyone here unfamiliar with Tucker Max... here is a funny story. It is not safe for work (probably... I don't know where you work).

You can click on the homepage at the upper left and it will explain Tucker to ya... If it doesn't sound like you will like him... you won't.

6:00pm: Rich shows up at my place. I have not seen Rich in 7 years. He has put on at least 60 pounds of muscle. I am shocked at his size. He is with one of his friends, “Eddie.” They are both in an elite special operations unit that is shipping to the middle east in a few weeks. Eddie is Hispanic, tall, angry, and muscular. He looks around my apartment as if deciding what piece of furniture he wants to break first. I consider that perhaps this wasn’t a good idea.

6:01: “So Tucker, I hear you finally learned how to drink a little bit?” Rich smiles at me. They have 2 cases of beer with them. I think maybe this is not such a bad idea after all.

7:00: They tell me some of the best stories I have ever heard. Many are tales of clandestine and violent death brought upon unsuspecting international terrorists or stories of sex with third world hookers. I think that this was a good idea.

7:05: We finish our first case.

7:45: I tell them two of my best stories. They are in tears laughing. Eddie tells Rich that he was right, I am the funniest guy he’s ever met. I think that this was a great idea.

Fed 'Stress Test': 29 of 30 Banks Could Weather Shock; Zions Doesn't Meet Threshold (http://online.wsj.com/news/articles/SB10001424052702303802104579451583350694694?mod=dj emalertNEWS)The Federal Reserve’s annual test of big banks’ financial health showed the largest U.S. firms are strong enough to withstand a severe economic downturn, potentially clearing the way for banks to reward investors with dividends and stock buybacks.

The Fed said 29 of the 30 largest institutions have enough capital to continue lending even when faced with a hypothetical jolt to the U.S. economy. One bank, Zions Bancorp, would fall below minimum capital level, the Fed said.

Ok, so this _really_ bugs my daughter.
I do this about every 3 or 4 days. I wait until she is quietly in her room doing homework, or reading, etc.

1. Go and get a spatula from the kitchen.
2. Go into her room and use the spatula to turn over some of the clothes that are lying on the floor, or on her bed.
3. Pat the item of clothing gently with the spatula and say, "Almost done"

It never fails, she freaks out and chases me out of her room.

To all the mothers who have illegitimate children conceived unintentionally: please, for the love of god, use proper birth control or abstain from sexual intercourse. You're ruining the world.

To all the mothers with children conceived intentionally within marriage: happy Mother's Day.

A Roomful of Yearning and Regret (http://www.nytimes.com/2010/12/12/fashion/12Modern.html?pagewanted=1&_r=1)

NOT long ago, the friend of a friend spent the night in a hotel room, which is sometimes what you do when you find out your spouse has been having a yearlong affair. His flight was sadly predictable — it’s all many of us are capable of after discovering such a betrayal — though I am sure he now realizes that mere movement is not a fix for that kind of agony.

I know this for two reasons: No. 1, I have had an affair; No. 2, I have been the victim of one. When you unfurl these two experiences in the sunlight for comparison, and measure their worth and pain, the former is only marginally better than the latter. And both, frankly, are awful....

There is certain math you should never do... like how much it actually costs to drive your car every day, or how much it costs per day to own a house.

I did one of those today... how many emails I get per day on average. For the month of September I averaged 152 emails a day, that includes Saturdays and Sundays. Pull weekends out and it is 207 per day. Presuming I work an 8 hour day, which I don't, that would be answering an email every 2.3 - 3.2 minutes of the work day. How does anyone expect to get anything done?

How do we kill email? I swear it has ruined civilization.

Rocker Ute

You get more than I do. How many of those actually merit a response, and how many are instant deletes?

Email is a great thing. For a thousand years, we made slow improvements in communication. Faster, cheaper, faster, cheaper. With email, we finally arrive at instant and free communication. This, of course, is unacceptable to people who make money on communication, so they somehow convince the world to start paying boatloads of money to email each other simply by changing the name "email" to "text."

Those are all the emails that a read worthy or merit a response, I delete everything else. Probably 50% warrant a response, but if I stop and read every email and say spend 30 seconds per email, and half of those get a 30 second response, the day is pissed away.

I especially hate the "I'm going to cc everyone remotely related to this email to cover my bases" guy, or the passive aggressive cc-Ing of people they think you might be scared of.

I'm of the opinion, and keep in mind my profession is based in this, that ease of communication is not a good thing.

You can fire off any stupid thing when it costs you nothing. You can burden any number of people. You can insert yourselves into someone's evening or any situation.

Seriously, do you remember 10-15 years ago where when you'd go home and the only time you heard from your boss or a client was when something was majorly wrong? I get emails routinely from clients all through the night and they ALL want a response by 9am.

I have a client right now in NY. He gets up at 5:30am (3:30am my time) and starts firing off emails of random thoughts. By 10am his time (8am mine) he is upset he I haven't responded within 3 hours. No amount of telling him that I turn my phone off from 8pm to 8am each day will satisfy him. There are hundreds of others less of an extreme but still the same mindset.

There is no bigger suck on my and my employees time than email.

Car/truck question.
I'm in the market for a truck for putting around. A guy in the ward mentioned he's looking to get rid of his 2001 Chevy 1500 4WD (V8, 5.3L), 177,000 miles. He has another truck that he can use for truck stuff and wants something that gets better gas mileage for his commute that just got longer.

I'm driving it for a few days this week, and taking to the garage to have it checked out. Seems to drive fine so far. He said it had a small oil leak somewhere, and he just tops it off every 4-5 gas fill ups.

Anyone with truck knowledge have insight on the 2001 engine/transmissions/etc? He's asking $5000 (has some minor body damage, which I don't really care about...) Seems reasonable to me if I can expect 4-5 years of low miles (probably < 8K per year)

If I buy it, I'm going to put one of these on the back window.

The oil leak may be a concern, could be a sign of expensive repairs to come, or it might not. Getting it checked by a mechanic should tell you if it is a problem.

Kelly has them at $6800 for very good condition (which I think it is: garage can verify). So, it seemed like a good deal to me.

The oil leak may be a concern, could be a sign of expensive repairs to come, or it might not. Getting it checked by a mechanic should tell you if it is a problem.

I picked it up late last night (he left the keys under the seat, so I didn't talk to him), and texted him a 'thank you for letting me check it out'. Just now he responded to have the mechanic check out the oil leak and give an estimate to have it fixed and knock that off the $5K. So that will help if it's not anything major...

My wife thinks I grew up in Mayberry (I actually grew up in SLC). My family never locked our doors - I remember coming home from school on multiple occasions and having the front door wide open and no one inside. No big deal.

Now, my East Coast wife locks the doors when we are inside the house. I don't know what she's worried about.

Not quite, but close. I like where I live. No traffic, but Knoxville is only 10 minutes south. Not that Knoxville is a cultural haven, but I can kind of keep a foot in both worlds.
When I bought a bike a few months ago, the guy at the bike shop encouraged me to get a bright orange riding shirt with a big "T" on it. The orange is easy to see, and it lets the 'hippy hating redneck in the truck' know that you're at least partially on his team, and to give you a little room on the road.

I lived in Los Alamos New Mexico for many years. Same thing. Huge percentage of the population has a PhD and a top secret clearance. Often times both parents. So, it's a pretty safe place One of our neighbours never locked their door. Even when they went on vacation. One time they were gone and we needed some spices for a barbeque, so I just went over to their house and rummaged around in their cabinets until I found what I needed. A lot of people were like that. And this was just a few years ago...

Do you think police are jaded though, since you see all the really bad stuff? On thanksgiving day someone tried my door and rang the bell at 6:00 AM and then took off once I came to the door. It was some white hipster driving a prius, either a drunk college kid or looking to make a quick grab (we had a couple of newspapers on the front lawn). I called the cops and they came just to take a report. The officer was extremely nice but told me over and over that I "absolutely" needed to get an alarm system. I understand that I live in a city with a lot of crime, but we're in a relatively peaceful neighborhood and we are definitely not in the nicest house around.

I just wonder if because you see so much crime and hear about the worst of the worst you get over-sensitized to it. Who knows.

Nope. I see constantly how thieves are like water and electricity. They take the path of least resistance.

They look for open garages, unlocked cars, cars with things left inside and unsecured houses.

I see how often a drunk college kid wanders into an unlocked house because they think it's their friends. A locked door keeps that from happening.

Property crimes are usually ones of opportunity. If you make it harder you're far less likely to be a victim. And frankly why not lock doors, it's not that hard to do is it? ;)

I don't know why people don't just get a remote car starter kit installed for a couple of hundred bucks. They can start their car without leaving their house or office, and if someone tries to break in and steal it while it is running, the car automatically quits when the transmission is taken out of Park.

Or peoe could just deal with the cold by putting on a coat and gloves, and not waste gas.

Sort of like home alarm systems, right? Oh, I hold no fantasy about them being full proof. But like you said, the majority of these things are least resistance motivated and getting through a gate is at least some level of resistance.

Depends on the alarm. I have one because it notifies me via text if it goes off and includes cameras.

Cameras are the best way to fight crime these days, because it let's us catch people and stop them

The biggest problem with Gated communities and secure buildings are the people. Propped open doors, people piggyback in when the gate is open etc.

From a police standpoint they're awful cause we're stuck outside when someone calls for help

Nope. We have some to some areas but not all.

The fire department usually has access to everything. People trust them (and fed ex) more. The ironic part is most calls which aren't an actual fire the fire guys want the police to ensure its safe first....and we can't get in

Probably not. Most cameras only catch the property itself, having them catch the street triggers them so often they quickly run out of space.

Cameras also aren't great for vehicles. Most cameras can't get license plates. They're awesome for people though.

It does take a little time to zero on on a particular date and time, about 5 minutes. I guess it depends on the equipment.

I'm a shade below 40, so "hip" is now only a term I use when describing replacement body parts. But when it comes to bang for bucks, I always go with Monoprice. I've been using their headphones for years. I currently use these ones (http://www.monoprice.com/Product?c_id=108&cp_id=10823&cs_id=1082708&p_id=11944&seq=1&format=2) and love them. At work, I'm within ear shot of a very loud Italian woman, and if I'm at my desk, I have these things on. They're great for noise cancelling and produce really good sound. Here's a link (http://www.monoprice.com/Category?c_id=120&cp_id=12001) to their full catalog.

Here's a review by CNET (http://www.cnet.com/news/how-good-can-21-59-headphones-be/) about the quality vs. cost of Monoprice's stuff. It's a few years old, but the concepts still hold true.
