Photography, of course, is art, but I don't know if any of the photos I have taken would qualify as fine art. Nonetheless, I thought I would start a photography thread.

I took this photo in May 2012 while visiting the Acropolis in Greece. That's the actual Olympic flame. A couple of hours after I was there, the torch-relay ran the flame down to the Panathenaic stadium and handed it over to the Brits for London 2012.
Even though the Parthenon had nothing to do with the ancient Olympics, it was still a cool moment, almost alone on a rainy afternoon in a place usually choked with tourists and crowds.310

Lovely. What camera and lens?
Sony A65 with an old manual focus Minolta 50 1.4. The lens has some fungus on it, so when it is at 1.4 it gives a bit of a glow like effect that I like (you can see the "silhouette" lines aren't solid and straight, that is because the light is bleedin or glowing).

I found out that I'm a finalist in a silly Vegas downtown alliance photo contest that I entered a few months ago. The rules were that you had to work downtown and that the photo had to have a downtown component to it. So not the biggest pool, but There's a little social this evening where they announce the winners. First place is a Nikon D7000 which would be nice to trade in for a new lens or something. I entered three photos:
(I should add that from a technical stand point, I don't think any of these are amazing photos. In fact, two of them were actually taken with my phone. I just thought that they were nice photos that met the contest requirements. I'll have to add some of my other stuff on this thread later.)
This is looking southwest from my office window on an atypical cloudy morning.

Our family was in the area in 2006 and attended the open house. This was the first modern day temple we had seen with murals of the local landscape, and dark, rich woodwork. A real beauty inside and out.

I served my mission in Sacramento from June 99- June 01. The temple was announced the April before I came home. The land that is built on is called the Mormon center, I spent many hours there at mission conferences there. Before that we used to go to Oakland and do sessions there. I still need to go back and do a session there. Great location, up on a hill, next to the freeway but still very secluded.

I spent my first year of my mission in Sacto with Richard Nixon, Manteca, Howe/Arden, Elk Grove and 6 glorious months in San Andreas.
I arrived in Sac-town the first transfer after Dick Nixon left, Robert Grow was my mission president. The other missionaries used to tell me that Pres Nixon would tell them that you are on your mission to do missionary work, and not to find your wife. He said that if you married someone that you met while on your mission, it was worse than drinking your own urine. So after that anytime me and my buddy heard that two people were getting married that met on the mission, we used to say "Pass the Urine!"
I spent 9 glorious months in Stockton, 7 months in North-Sac, 4 months in Rancho Cordova, the rest in Galt and Elk Grove. Never made it up to the foothills, which was a crying shame.

Last summer, we took a weekend trip to Jackson, WY on motorcycles. I got up early in the morning to ride up and take some pictures of Tetons in the soft light at dawn. I just used my iPhone camera, which is still probably the best camera I have ever owned. It was in the 40's that morning, so it was a cold ride. But it was a fun experience. I'd argue that the temple looks fine, but the hillside shot seems fake because the reds are off. Maybe dialed back a little on the red side would look better. Also, you lose some detail with that; have you tried to use "sharpen" after using it?

There is no question that you lose detail with pop art, epsecially with reds.
Pop art can give a photo a touch of unreality.

The game tonight was not great, but the sunset at the end of the game was spectacular!

I'm thinking about starting a blog for posting about my efforts in photography. I would talk about the subjects and locations, and about the experience of getting the pictures. Problem: I can't think of a title. Any suggestions?
Possiblities I thought of are "The Camera Eye" after the Rush song or "Through the Camera Lens."

Here's the sun setting over the Newport peninsula and Catalina. If I had pulled out my phone 60 seconds earlier it was really breathtaking.

Here is a quick and dirty one while learning the art of astrophotography better. I took in on my front porch. It is the orion nebula

This doesn't really belong in this forum, but I have a question.
There is an old painting with a cocky looking smirk on the man and he is holding a cane and pointing his fingers. Somebody on the former messageboard used it as an avatar at one time. I'm racking my brain to remember who the painter is, anyone remember?

Taken near Stansbury Island. I was amazed how dark the sky gets there so close to SLC

I love Utah sunsets. I’ve almost always lived in places with a good to great view over the valley to the east and often take those sunsets for granted.
When I lived in Texas the sun would just kind of disappear on the horizon at night and I really missed them.

I contribute photos on the "other" board, and figured I could add to this thread. Here are some of my favourite recent images I have shared.
Just finished a painting, and I almost like the remnants left behind from the clean up more than the actual work of art:

About a month ago, during a short warm spell, I got out and got a couple of good shots of a modern wood stringer bridge:

Visited Mormon Red Death this past long weekend. He took us to the beach. It was chilly, but certainly warmer than whence we came. Here are a couple of my favourite shots:

tooblue--what kind of camera do you have
I shoot with an older Cannon 6D, with a 24-105mm lens (which is standard for the camera). The pics of my art table and edge tape scraps were shot using a 35mm 1:2 IS USM lens. It's particularly useful capturing depth of field pics in low-light conditions.
To clarify, I am not a photographer—I know enough to capture a good image, but more importantly I am adept at post-editing in the RAW Photoshop development environment, which is the new darkroom process for photogs. All professionally shot images have been heavily edited in RAW/Photoshop. Knowing what you are doing at the point of shooting, along with using artificial lighting helps greatly in mitigating how much post editing needs to be done. But don't be fooled, all really good photographs have been heavily post edited. Here's a shot from late last summer of the mist on the empty field adjacent to our home:
Original shot with minimal editing:

Heavily edited shot applying layers of HDR toning, among other techniques:

Pictures look good. Is the line in the pic a shooting star?
