I thought it would be interesting to see where others served their missions.

I served in what was called the Austria Vienna South mission. It consisted of Slovenia, Croatia, Bosnia and Serbia. Each country was broken up into into zones and I was fortunate to serve in Slovenia from May 1997-March 1999. Loved every minute of it!!

Side note-now each country has their own individual mission, with the exception of Bosnia, I believe. I don't think we have missionaries there right now, but I could be wrong.

Russia Moscow South Mission 2003-2005. What was my mission has been broken up and split between several different missions now. Moscow wasn't technically part of our mission but the mission office was there so I spent a good deal of time there. I served in the City of Smolensk (huge WWII city and I am sure USS Utah would love to visit there to see some of the sights and battlefields) and one of the oldest cities in Eastern Europe, followed by Ryazan, and finished my mission in Minsk, Belarus.

Loved it. Love the people. Love the food (mostly). Wouldn't go do it again if you paid me.

New Hampshire, Manchester. At the time parts of NY, VT, NH, ME, and Mass, but no whole state. Served near the Joseph Smith birthplace memorial and held district meetings there. Loved coastal NH ( Portsmouth) The r.s there was known for their 'Exponent' tendencies.

P.S. met my wife while she was serving as a J.S birthplace memorial visitors center missionary.

No temples :( First shall be last and last shall be first i guess . . .

To anyone who served in El Salvador, watching this video is a very emotional experience. The accents, the clothing, the dances. Terrific:

Germany Munich, 1990-91. One of the APs that greeted me getting off the plane was none other than current Hawaii head coach (and son of former BYU HC Frank) Gib Arnold. The mission included west-central Austria (Innsbruck and Salzburg), most of southern Germany and several U.S. servicemen's wards. Today, Austria is entirely within its own mission, and the U.S. presence there is a fraction of what it once was. Then, with stops in Innsbruck, Heidelberg and Munich, and working with Americans for more than half my mission, I had it waaaaa-aaaaay too easy for a European mission stint.

Hartford Connecticut Mission -- '94-'96.

At the time, it covered all of CT (except for that little panhandle thingy on the SW corner) and half of RI including Providence. A Connecticut temple was announced at that time but still has not been built due to significant local resistance. In the meantime, temples have been built in nearby Boston and White Plains. I understand the Utica, NY mission was dissolved and added back into the CT mission. It had been broken off as its own mission just before I got there.

You're the first person I've met outside that country that also served there. Small world. Had they built their own church yet? I spent about 17 months in Celje and we met with 2-3 members in a rented city hall building on Sundays. Church lasted about 45 minutes. Best church meetings I've ever attended.

Did you spend any time in Lowell, perchance?

Reminds me of an experience I had while in Lowell. I was paired up with a miserable missionary for the day. He wanted to go home and was hating his missionary experience. More than anything he hated knocking doors (I can't really blame him for that). While I forced him to miserably knock doors in an apartment building, we walked down a hall and saw an open door. As we looked through the open door we a saw a woman and her son unpacking from a recent move. The woman immediately recognized me from a discussion I had with her 8 months previously while I was in East Boston. She had just moved up to Lowell that morning and we then offered to help her unpack. She accepted our help and the missionary with me was spared another door knock for that day. It was a weird coincidence that on the only day that I was in Lowell there happened to be a woman moving in who I had met in East Boston 8 months previously.

The missionary went home about two months later, but at least he had a day that didn't suck so bad.

California, Arcadia (Mandarin), 1990 - 1992. There were only a few of us, so I guess that whole anonymity thing is irrelevant now.

Speaking Mandarin meant we officially covered the entire area between the San Diego and the San Francisco missions (both of which had Mandarin speaking missionaries), but spent most of our time in the LA Basin (CLAM, Arcadia, Anaheim, Riverside, and Ventura missions).

I worked hard, followed the rules, and tried my best every day to help people. But I still found ways to go to a number of Dodgers games, watch Green Bay play the LA Rams in a preseason game, helped put the flowers on floats for the Rose Parade, sneak away to go to Oingo Boingo 'Dead Man's Party' concert at Irvine Meadows Amphitheater on Halloween, and cheered loudly from the seats at the Rose Bowl as the Bruins beat byu while wearing a Utah tie with my missionary monkey suit.

I spent time in Tulsa II, OKC III, Springfield MO, Joplin Mo, and Tahlequah, OK.

I rode a Carabella 10 speed, and had a little yellow bag under the seat that held 3 BOM's. No need for helmets in those day's, and the riding was free and easy. I had two Swedish Knit suits, each with two pants, 10 white shirts, 4 short sleeve, 6 long sleeve, and two pair of Forward Thrust Shoes, (Black and Brown). I wore the "onesies" as they were they only option then. At 18 months I made District Leader and got a Ford Fairmont, with 160 miles a week available. I think the news about the "emergency transfer" from Springfield spread throughout the mission, and at the last conference when our new Mission President was introduced I may have been a bit of a legend, as I was asked about it a lot that day.

If you served in east San Jose you know where we spent most of our time. Served in the same branch and lived in the same apartment the whole 2 years. I highly recommend it as you can get some decent furniture and don't have to worry about being transferred. It's like a modern day Romeo and Juliet. A boy serving veal piccata and Chilean sea bass at the Market Street Broiler falls in love with a girl slinging chicken fried steak at The Cowboy Grub.

Do they still run the radio ad in Utah where they sing "there ain't no sub for the Cowboy Grub!" Anyone? I have some really good memories surrounding that place, actually.

It was a favorite hangout during my college days. I haven't been back since, and am surprised it is still there.

Memory: I am sitting there with a couple of my fellow nice-guy, clean-cut, naive RM buddies over lunch, and we insisted that the waitress tell us what "prairie oysters" were. (We honestly didn't know.) With great satisfaction she told us, and I could tell she really enjoyed our embarrassed response.

I haven't heard that particular ad. We live just down the street from Cowboy Grub and my wife commented the other day how she can't understand how they stay in business. I reminded her that we usually get take-out from there a few times a month. My kids like the chicken noodle soup and scones and it's relatively inexpensive. Whenever I go in it seems to be near capacity. I guess people like the food/price.

San Antonio Texas - Southern Baptists followed me around for two years straight. It is also where I learned something I try to practice every day. An old lady said to me once, "I was raised to believe that everybody was your friend until you knew otherwise."

Yes, in Atlantic City. For your own sake, don't ask the details.

I also got half price at Wendy's, because a sweet spirited LDS gal in the area was the manager. We abused the heck out of that discount. So much so, in fact, that the LDS gal lost the "sweet" part of the "sweet spirit" and invited us to stop being ubermoochers.

I was tempted to call down the wrath of the Almighty on her. Nothing is better to soothe the battered missionary than a plethora of half price Singles With Cheese.

Also, Cowboy Grub is moving locations. Apparently that entire strip-mall will be turned into a hotel and the restaurant will move to another iconic East SL location - the Arnold Palmer miniature golf on 3300 S.

In the 60+ years of my parents living in the SL Valley I think they've only been to and/or frequented three restaurants. Cowboy Grub is one of them. (Souper Salad and Mimi's being the other two). I can't imagine what they'll do with the impending Cowboy Grub downtime.

I discovered early on that mentioning Missouri, St. Louis as where you served was always a downer at parties when surrounded by missionaries who had gone to exotic places. The babes didn't exactly flock to hear my Show Me State Stories. :(

one of the more unrecognized reasons for serving a mission is to hopefully increase your attractiveness to the opposite sex. Like most things for the 18-21 year old male it all boils down to sex. Sure there are a multitide of other reasons why we opt for the 2 year Mormon Vacation, but the hope of hooking up in the future with a hot babe is high on the proirity list.

I do think serving a mission helped in whooing the ladies, but clearly I overestimated the bump I would get post mission. And I think mentioning that I went to Russia or Tahitia (instead of the Midwest) would have helped slightly :)

I always thought that the babes were more inclined toward the statesiders because there was less risk in contracting hepatitis or some parasite from making out with them?

With very little expertise and just a passing interest, I think only the following missions can help with the ladies:

Italy, France, Switzerland, Greece, Japan, NYC, and, just maybe, Winnepeg.

And going is not enough - you have to bring something back. Make authentic Italian pasta, French pastries, sushi from scratch. Throw Greek toga parties. Recite Italian poetry. That kind of crap. Talk about how you plan to visit your mission country throughout your life, including on your honeymoon.

If you went Spanish speaking, your only hope is to adopt a disadvantaged Mexican immigrant with the Big Brothers program.

It all starts with going to a place the location of which is known to the casual observer. Most people have only a vague idea of where most Latin American countries are. But I learned how to make guacamole!

I used to joke that I had two strikes against me immediately amongst the institute crowd at the U. I went on a stateside mission and I went to Skyline High School (which was the favorite school to hate at the time). It was okay, the institute crowd of girls had similar strikes against them in my book because they were the institute crowd.

I think one of the most bizarre Utah culture things is to ask someone where they went to high school when they find out you are local. I think it is a weird way of finding out your economic status, but I still get people to this day who will say, "oh, Skyline?"

Yeah, the food chain is:

West guys brag when they have rich East girlfriends. East guys brag when they have rich Olympus girlfriends. Olympus guys dream about rich Alta girls. Alta guys are dying to get into the rich Park City girl scene.

There are no other schools in the SLC chain. Sorry to the Rams, Wildcats, Spartans, Eagles, and Darts.

That food chain is about 20 years out of date, by the way. I don't even know if all those schools are still open.

Is it really just a Utah thing to find out where someone went to high school? As a Utahn, I suppose I can never know the answer.

In St Louis it's also a thing.
