Two suggestions:

(1) This moves to the professional sports category

and

(2) It gets the sticky treatment to stay at the top and is updated as needed. (like the recruiting thread here in the Utah football category)

I don't know how either of those things happen though.

Not sure how to re-categorize. Maybe I'll cut and paste to a new thread in the appropriate category. Thanks!

This from the Milwaukee Wisconsin Journal Sentinel in Sep. 2012. Couldn't find if he was picked up later in the season.

"On Thursday, the Packers waived wide receiver Shaky Smithson off injured reserve with an injury settlement."

It looks like he worked out for the Raiders in October 2012. (http://www.sbreport.net/raider_news/008/9970.html)

Cut by Pittsburgh in March 2012. Shortly after, his agent said a few teams were interested. Wasn't signed in 2012 season, currently unsigned FA.

It looks like Paul Kruger is definitely done in Baltimore, and is getting serious looks from the Browns and Colts.

per ESPN (http://espn.go.com/nfl/story/_/id/9030980/dannell-ellerbe-not-paul-kruger-priority-baltimore-ravens), "A source said the Cleveland Browns (http://espn.go.com/nfl/team/_/name/cle/cleveland-browns) are definitely prepared to try to sign Kruger. However, they will confront intense competition from the Indianapolis Colts (http://espn.go.com/nfl/team/_/name/ind/indianapolis-colts), who will attempt to persuade Kruger to rejoin Chuck Pagano, the former Ravens defensive coordinator and current Colts head coach. According to a source, the Colts have targeted Kruger as the replacement for Dwight Freeney (http://espn.go.com/nfl/player/_/id/3539/dwight-freeney), the franchise's career sack leader who also hits the market next week. Kruger, a 2009 second-round pick, collected a career-high nine sacks this past season."

If these are the two best choices for Paul in regards to financial stability, I certainly hope that even if Cleveland offers more money, that Paul signs with Indy. Cleveland franchises haven't necessarily........ prospered recently.

I hope that happens. The Bills are my second favorite team. They need a QB though. Fitzpatrick is a walking turnover.

The Chiefs cut their starting RT, Eric Winston, on Wednesday night. I guess that means they are in the market for a starting RT - Hello Luke Joeckel as the #1 pick in the draft. I hope Star is given a clean bill of health and does well at the Pro Day on the 20th.

I actually think Buffalo is a better option than the mistake on the lake. I am not saying it is a good one. Just saying I would choose Buffalo over Cleveland. He would at least get to play opposite of Super Mario.

I would never say no to a Utah player with the Bills, but Kyle Williams is a pretty damn good nose tackle and we've got more pressing issues elsewhere. I'll get killed for saying this, but I was begging for Van Noy to declare and for the Bills to take him. Getting Kruger would be huge -- playing opposite Mario Williams, he could be in line for a monster year that Bryce Paup had in his first year in Buffalo playing opposite Bruce Smith, when all Paup did was get 17.5 sacks and earn NFL DPOY honors.

Per ESPN, Stevenson Sylvester (Restricted Free Agent) wasn't offered a Tender by Pittsburgh, meaning he is now an Unrestricted Free Agent. Apparently he hasn't progressed like Pittsburgh had hoped.

I'm not sold on Kyle Van Noy. The guy is amazing, but so is everyone in the NFL. I think what killed Jimmer is what will kill KVN.

Neither one has learned how to play in a system and "do their job." KVN is very, very good, and Bronco uses him in a very smart way. BUT, in the NFL, KVN won't be able to do whatever he wants on whatever play he wants. He will be expected to do a job, and only that job.

I feel this way for one reason: since he was a freshman, they have been mentioning how if he gained a little weight it would take his game to the next level. He hasn't gained weight.

Gaining weight isn't hard, it just takes work. Work he hasn't done yet. He relies too much on his amazing, incredible natural ability.

Anyways, I hope the guy proves me wrong. He has an incredible skill set and once they hit the NFL, I root for everyone from Utah (and most of the BYU guys that can actually make the NFL aren't the incredible douche bags the other 99% of BYU players are).

I like Van Noy as an NFL player, but don't understand all the love for Ansah. True he is an absolute freak athlete in college, but doesn't seem to understand techniques.

But like you I will happily cheer for any NFL player who played college ball in Utah.

I think Ziggy could be a very good NFL player, but I don't know if a team will be patient enough for him to develop. With unguaranteed contracts, if he is taken top 10 and doesn't have Von Miller type numbers (which is what a top 10 pick will be expected to do), will they just cut him and if he hasn't been taught proper technique will be just flame out?

If he, and any rookie for that matter, is smart, they would live off $100,000 a year for their first deal, invest every other penny they make and not touch it until they are 60, they would be set for life. Then you can take your second contract and do whatever you want with it.

Hall is so frustrating. He's got great talent but it seems like he gives up as many big plays as he makes. He's definitely not a "shut-down" corner. The Skins should make the defensive backfield a priority in the draft and free agency. Both safety and corner.

I'm not sold on Van Noy. He doesn't have size to be an NFL OLB. I think those athletic tackles will eat him up. According to BYU media guide he's 235, which means he's 225. Look at the successful guys in his mold in the NFL: Matthews (255), A. Smith (260), Wake (258), Ware (255), Kruger (270), Hali (270). The exception here being Von Miller (235).

They are trying to survive by becoming the national LDS newspaper. Weddle is a good story for their audience because of his conversion. If you look at the most-read stories every day, they are LDS-oriented. That's why we see so much about BYU sports on the DesNews online edition. I once asked a writer there why, in the Sunday morning DesNews, a minor BYU win would get top billing over a major Utah win, and he said they're just catering to their core national audience.

They also fired a good chunk of their actual journalists, choosing to let 'contributors' write to save money.

They're expanding their numbers by online subscriptions, because they can't actually sell hard copies in Utah.

As someone who isn't LDS, both the Deseret News and KSL are close to unreadable/unwatchable as most every story gets a religious twist (even when its not religious) I just want sports and news. (For those that don't know KUTV routinely destroys KSL in the ratings these days)

As for sports, they have one writer assigned to Utah, Dirk Faced. Amy Donaldson has stated writing articles, but she's mediocre at best. They forced Linda Hamilton out of gymnastics coverage a few years ago. Usually they don't send a local reporter to cover Utah on the road, instead hiring a student from the opposing schools student body to write the article (or just publishing Utah's press release)

I think anyone who ever saw Reggie Dunn try to catch a ball that wasn't a kickoff already knew this, but it looks like he is having some difficulties trying to field punts cleanly at Steelers' OTAs. http://www.steelersdepot.com/2013/05/10-things-we-learned-from-the-steelers-first-ota-session-of-2013/

With the limits on NFL rosters, I'd be really surprised if Dunn sticks around. Kickoffs simply aren't important enough these days to have a specialist handle them. Too bad - he was really fun to watch.

I know the NFL is trying to make kickoffs less important, but I'm not sure they have succeeded. I think a great kick returner is still a valuable piece.

Certainly, but you have to be able to do something else. I just don't thing that there are enough roster spots to hold one for a guy that can only do kickoffs.

I looked at current rosters last night. It looks like Devonte was cut by Washington, but the others are still fighting to stay on by roster reduction date (down to 75) on August 27. (Check out the current list on the original post)

My argument is that you should make a spot for a specialist. Too many teams try to use a WR. But successful returners need a burst, and a guy who has used his burst on route running won't have it for the kickoff.

Many teams use WRs who don't actually see the field as a WR unless there are significant injuries. I guess you need that depth at WR since those guys are always pulling hamstrings or twisting ankles.

The problem with that is KR borders on being the least valuable of the specialist positions. I would take an All-Pro kicker, punter, punt returner -- even long snapper, if such a designation exists -- before I'd take an All-Pro kick returner. The Buffalo Bills made four Super Bowls fueled significantly by another specialist -- the gunner -- in Steve Tasker. (Think of Greg Bird for the Utes two years ago). Not only that, but KR is the one specialist you can truly neutralize. And today's rules are doing just that. And not only are new rules being crafted to neutralize kick returners, there are current penalties in place for interfering with the ability of the other specialists to do their job (roughing the kicker/punter, leaping -- there are even penalties for interfering with the long snapper). There are no such special penalties for the kick returner.

In the college game, the KR specialist is huge because coaches are more prone to short-change special teams practices due to practice constraints. A guy like Reggie Dunn can exploit that. In the NFL, where the constraints are on roster size and not on practice time, I think you'll find more and more coaches place less of an emphasis on a position that will rarely win you games and focus on specialist positions where games can often be won or lost.

Did Stevenson have injuries or anything? Seems odd that they re-signed him as a FA only to cut him in camp...but maybe he just wasn't making those necessary leaps in his progression.

Cuts to 75 must be made by 2 p.m. MST today. Final cuts to 53 must be made by 4 p.m. MST on Saturday, August 31. Teams may claim players off of waivers until Sunday, September 1 at 10 a.m. MST. Practice Squads of eight players must be finalized by Wednesday, September 4 at 2 p.m. MST.

Here's to all of our Utes staying healthy, earning a roster spot, and enjoying a successful season!

From what I've seen, David Reed (who was traded to Indianapolis) is fighting for a WR and KR spot; Brandon Burton is still listed as a 3rd string CB; Tevita Finau is listed as a 3rd string DE for the Jets; Sealver Siliga is fighting for a spot in Seattle; Joe Kruger is on the cusp in Philadelphia; and the four Undrafted Free Agents (Reggie Dunn, Tevita Stevens, David Rolf, and Sam Brenner) are all fighting for a spot.

What is the Chiefs' game plan going into this game? You know that Tuel and the Bills will make some critical mistakes. You need to be patient, wait for those mistakes and then capitalize on them. On ohfense, you need to make sure to not make any mistakes, protect the ball and take advantage of short field when you get the opportunity. The Chiefs have executed their game plan to absolute perfection so far.

Bills suck.

Nice to see Asiata get in the endzone three times. Is Asiata the all-time best goal-line runner for Utah? He was money from within five yards. We ran that stupid direct snap for years and no one (including the Crimson Tide) could figure that one out.

I posted this in another thread, but it deserves two posts for those that have mancrushes on Starlight Lotulelei: http://www.charlotteobserver.com/2013/12/14/4545152/panthers-dt-star-lotulelei-a-man.html#.Uq8zTuKqun8

The article mentions that Lowell Lotulelei is living with Star in Charlotte and he will enroll at Utah in the Spring.

Alex Smith sits out week 17 for the second straight season. This year it's because KC is locked into the 5th seed. Could not be happier for him. Quite a few Utes are heading to the playoffs this year.

Tevita Stevens signs a futures contract with the Redskins, which will likely keep him in their employ through training camp next year. With a new regime on the way, he'll certainly have an opportunity to make his mark. Good for him.

Zane Beadles is up for a big contract this off-season. Jordan Gross is an UFA, but said he will only resign with Carolina (he just finished his 3rd best statistical season). Paul Soliai and Matt Asiata will be UFAs and seem to be looking at new contracts somewhere. RJ Stanford and Stevenson Sylvester will be UFAs and may be a stretch to be on an active roster in 2014.

I had never noticed how big Steve Smith's contract is. That is gigantic for a WR. I'm not sure Carolina is going to get their money worth on that one.

With the exception of Steve Smith, all of the remaining U of U free agents may be done in the NFL, unfortunately. Last year, Brice McCain graded out as the very worst cover corner out of 110 qualifiers (his 5'9" size doesn't help). For Stevenson Sylvester - not much of a market for a 5-year vet FA who can't stay healthy, has a relatively high minimum salary (his minimum salary per time in the league is 730k), and can't crack the depth chart. RJ Stanford was a restricted free agent who didn't even get tendered by the Dolphins. He now hits the open market with an extremely deep CB pool. Walterfootball.com has him rated as the 56th best CB free agent (ahead of Brice McCain at #62).

I was surprised to see the number of recent Pro Bowlers from Utah, especially when you consider that these players were all recruited to compete in the Mountain West Conference. This group is not a product of the school's recent move to the Pac-12: Steve Smith (http://espn.go.com/nfl/player/_/id/2622/steve-smith), Jordan Gross (http://espn.go.com/nfl/player/_/id/4466/jordan-gross), Zane Beadles (http://espn.go.com/nfl/player/_/id/13261/zane-beadles), Eric Weddle (http://espn.go.com/nfl/player/_/id/10481/eric-weddle) and Paul Soliai (http://espn.go.com/nfl/player/_/id/10552/paul-soliai). That's just the Pro Bowl guys from the past three seasons. The Utes have several more good players in the league on top of that.

Jake Murphy in Baltimore for a workout.

"The Ravens are working out tight ends Emmanuel Ogbuehi, Kellen Davis, Matt Mulligan and Jake Murphy today at team headquarters, according to sources," wrote Aaron Wilson (http://www.baltimoresun.com/sports/ravens/ravens-insider/bal-source-ravens-working-out-tight-end-emmanuel-ogbuehi-today-20140923,0,2840012.story) of the Baltimore Sun.

I've never been much into fantasy football, but how well would a mostly Ute alumni team have done this week?

Matt Asiata- 3 TDs on 78 yards

Steve Smith- 2 TDs on 7 receptions for 139 yards

Alex Smith- 3 TDs on 248 yards passing (still in the 4th quarter)

One of my favorite things written about Steve Smith last week (before the game)

RAVENS (-3) over Panthers
Steve Smith Steve Smith Steve Smith Steve Smith Steve Smith Steve Smith Steve Smith Steve Smith. I honestly think the Panthers are probably a better team than the Ravens, but there is no possible way I could bring myself to bet against Smith facing the Panthers. If they lose or don’t cover, whatever, that’ll happen. But if I take the Panthers, I know the Ravens are going to take the ball first, and Smith is going to come onto the field and catch a slant and lay out somebody trying to tackle him, and he’s going to get up and win a fistfight with the entire Carolina organization, and I’m going to feel very stupid about betting on the Panthers with 59 minutes to go in the game.
Let me tell you a story. During my year living in Vegas, I played a fair amount of poker. One day, I was playing at Mandalay Bay and talking to the guy next to me, who eventually revealed he had played wideout on the same junior college team (Santa Monica College) as Smith and Chad Johnson, then Chad Ochocinco. Somebody at the table asked him about Ochocinco and he had nothing but hilarious stories to tell about Ochocinco goofing around and having fun.
I asked him about Smith, though, and the man’s brow immediately furrowed. His smile disappeared. He told me a story of getting into an argument with Smith over some long-forgotten situation where he was in the right. The poker player was a younger man then, and as many of us were as young men, he got very obstinate about being in the right and was willing to turn an otherwise irrelevant slight into a fight. He got to the point where he was about ready to throw down … at which point Smith escalated the tension about 10 levels beyond anything my man could have ever generated at his most wronged. He looked into Smith’s eyes and saw a rage he could never hope to match. In sheer self-preservation mode, he apologized to Smith and got as far away as possible. It was a lot like thehigh school bully scene from Louie (http://gawker.com/5615717/high-school-bully-emasculates-louis-ck), only with one Steve Smith instead of a bunch of high schoolers.5 (http://grantland.com/the-triangle/nfl-week-4-coaches-marvin-lewis-chip-kelly-bruce-arians/#fn-5)
As he finished the story, I laughed in support of the guy’s situation and said knowingly, “I guess you don’t fuck with Steve Smith.” He looked at me with great sincerity, as if to warn me out of even the slightest possible hint of serious interest in the pursuit, and said very clearly: “Do not fuck with Steve Smith.”
The Panthers fucked with Steve Smith.

Rumors on twitter yesterday had Jake Murphy signing with Miami's practice squad. Hopefully it's true. I've always maintained that Jake, with his degree and famous father (I hear his had played a professional sport but I can't quite recall which....), will be just fine in life without an NFL career and that he didn't stand to gain much personally by staying for his senior season. But I'm sure it would still be great for him to at least have a cup of postum in the NFL.

That story alone should get him into the HOF.

Seriously, who would ever guess that the most fearsome man in the NFL for a solid decade would be a 5'7" WR?

He just called his shot, Babe Ruth style, Joe Namath style, and he delivered.

He's listed as being 5-9, but no matter. Steve Smith is the greatest small WR to ever play in the NFL and it's not even close. Two-time All-Pro, five-time Pro Bowler and only one of three WRs since the merger to win the receiving triple crown (catches, TDs, yards). The others are Jerry Rice and Sterling Sharpe -- the greatest WR of all time and another would-be HOF'er whose career was cut short by injury just as the passing game (and Brett Favre) in the NFL was really emerging.

Steve Smith had to wait until he was 35 before having a truly elite QB throw to him. Jake Delhomme was good, but limited. Cam Newton was young. In the prime of his career, he mustered up a 1,000-yard season in 2007 when Carolina had four different starting QBs (Vinny Testaverde, Matt Moore, Delhomme and David Carr) in the same season. He's also a beast in the postseason -- in nine postseason games, he has 10 TDs (eight receiving, one rushing, one PR).

Thoughts on the current state of Utes (and other locals) in the NFL and how it reflects on the program.

Coach Whitt always talks about "players winning games". We can take this to mean that unless you have great players, you probably won't win many games. The NFL doesn't include too many non-great college players. The reverse says that if your program puts players into the NFL, they must be great players, and if you have great players your program is probably pretty healthy.

Here are some good observations:

- The Utes have 126% more players in the NFL than all other instate schools combined.
- The Utes have 240% more players in the NFL than USU (2nd in state).
- The Utes have 3x the number of players in the NFL as BYU.
- There are currently 7 Ute DL in the NFL! >3x the number of all other instate schools combined. If you are a Utah high school DL being recruited by Utah and any other instate school, you'd be crazy to not choose the U (this is assuming high school players would like to play in the NFL.)
- As much as BYU likes to hype the quality of their LBs, the Utes have twice as many LBs in the NFL, as the same number as all other instate schools combined.
- Utah has more OL in the league than all other instate schools combined.
- Quantity and Quality. No other school can even come close to the number of actual contributors in the NFL.
- Utes players have a combined >$280.8M in signed contracts (almost 3x the total of all other instate schools combined.)
- Because of the large contracts, former Utes give back to the program. When was the last time you heard of a BYU, USU, or Weber State player giving a significant donation to their schools? These gifts can help improve facilities and offset other programmatical costs.
- Free publicity! I love seeing NFL-Utes wearing Utah gear during interviews (Weddle) and warm-ups (Smith, Sr.) and taking post game photos with other Utes (Beadles, Palepoi, McCoy, and Weddle.)
- NFL players hanging around the football facility in the off-season is awesome! How cool is it for our current Utes to work out with NFL stars. I would hope there is a benefit to young players seeing how hard they haves to work to make it to the league. It is always nice having a mentor who can show you the ropes.

Now some bad observations:

- The Utes have 3 offensive skill players in the league. The current three will eventually hit zero if it doesn't get replenished soon. This makes me wonder if all of the Utes' recent Offensive Coordinator changes were due to bad coaching or poor recruiting/players. I would think that if the Utes had great offensive players, the offense may not have struggled as much as it recently has.
- USU has as many DBs in the league as the Utes. Our quality of DBs has not been up to par the last few years. This obviously has to change when you play Pac-12 offenses that throw it as much as they do. Our two starting CBs are a converted Safety and a converted WR.
- The Utes need more NFL-caliber skill position players. We have realized in the last few years that too-short, too-slow, too weak won't win many Pac-12 games. We could get away with them in the MWC, but no more. I always feel good about our roster improvement when I imagine our current team playing a MWC schedule. This team is as talented as any we have ever had at the U.
- We haven't had a high draft pick in 5 years. Most of our young NFL-Utes are Undrafted Free Agents or late round picks. These typically are the too-short, too-slow, try-hard types. Time to start producing some early-round talent.

Funny observations:
- BYU sucks! Seriously. They have four active NFL players; one Long Snapper, one too-old DL, one reserve OL, and Ziggy. Wow!
- If the Utes can continue to produce NFL talent, the difference in program health will only get wider. This is just the beginning.

Any I missed?

Thanks, I always love your updates 3Gen. For all of the Ute fans who like to demean the accomplishments of past teams (2008 in particular) in some misguided attempt to prove the current team's worth, one should just point to your list. The number of Ute defenders that are solid NFlers after 5 years from that team is truly astounding.

Whatever happened to the last Kemoeatu (Benji?)? He initially signed with West Virginia, then Utah, then JC. Did he just fizzle out?

I was starting to think a big reason BYU has struggled with getting guys in the league was the post-mission "reality check" - settling down and getting married, and wanting to have a good quality life after football. Hard to blame a guy for wanting to be healthy to enjoy his kids and grandkids.

But with the number of free agents that signed this year from Provo, it's pretty clear the main factor is a serious deficiency with player development.

No draft picks four out of the last six years drives home that they're a shadow of their former selves.

Hopefully Utah continues manufacturing NFL players out of 3 star recruits, up from the 2 star recruits we used to work with. Eventually we'll be snagging more 4 stars players.

I don't know why everyone hasn't talked about their recruiting drop off. The year before they went Indy, their class was ranked in the 30's. The year after? 60's. It's been in the 60's ever since.

Their problem is a talent problem. 2010 was their last decent class. The talent has dropped considerably, and we saw that last year. After Hill went down, they went 1-4 vs MWC and UCF. Then they lost to Memphis. They just lack talent. If Hill gets hurt again, this will be a very, very ugly year. They have 1, maybe 2 P5 level players on their team. Hill and maybe someone else.

Since Indy/PAC-12 Utah's classes have averaged 44 over the sites (Rivals, Scout, 247). BYU's have averaged 60. There is a HUGE talent difference.

I've said it a hundred times, but I don't get the choice to go Indy. It was stupid. Worse bowl, worse schedule, worse recruiting, less wins, etc. They do have a little more money, but not much more than Boise.

What's the point?

If they had stayed in the MWC, they would have gone to a BCS bowl by now. They'd be a big fish in a little pond. Their recruiting classes would be in the 25-35 range. They'd be ranked every year. They would have a little less money, but they'd have everything else that fanbase loves.

I would be disappointed if we were in the Vegas bowl. That would mean we slipped up somewhere. BUT, demolishing that team would be a nice consolation prize.

Utah

Could you imagine if they had stayed in the MWC? Asiata, Fanaika, Hansen, Ofa, Mokofisi, Pita T are all players that might have gone to BYU instead of Utah if they had remained a big fish in a little pond.

That would be huge for us. Hansen is our QB of the future. Fanaika, Pita T will be All PAC-12 players. Mokofisi is a monster at DT.

But, indy...yeah...morons.

Couldn't happen to a better group of people.

Pride before the fall.

Supposedly their #2 QB last year, Christian Stewart, said that after the USU game the team was seriously deflated, knowing their destiny was to play in the Miami Beach Bowl, or whatever that game was.

They have a depth problem, for sure, but they also have really serious issues with trying to convince themselves and their fans that independence is an acceptable reality. The way their fanbase has turned on Bronco reveals a fundamental anger, and Bronco's body language, and the way the Oregon State job was filled, and now going shooting a blank in the NFL draft...no Bueno.

It looks like Bronco's latest faux pas was declare "P5 or bust within 3 years". (This guy is the Inspector Clouseau of PR, one for the text books, for sure).

Then the Big-12 commissioner (?) revealed that Sunday play wasn't an issue with the Big-12 because BYU never got that far in the conversation.

All of these things are cold, objective facts, and it's seriously starting to sink in. Even Dick Harmon is going from being delusional with optimism to basically bracing for a brutal September... but now there's no conference race to fall back onto as a secondary goal.

Interesting situation developing in San Diego with Eric Weddle's deal: http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2015/06/02/eric-weddles-contract-situations-taking-an-ugly-turn-in-san-diego/

Sounds more and more like his days there are numbered...but you'd have to think there will be a pretty good market out there for one of the top Safeties in the game.

I'm having a hard time following what his agent is saying here (what the ellipsis omitted would maybe be helpful):

“He will play his final 16 games as a Charger as a free safety – nothing else,” agent David Canter said. “His going above and beyond for them is why they won’t give him a contract extension. . . .

“It’s blatantly obvious after me asking the team time and again to extend us that Eric isn’t wanted. So it’s time for Eric to move on [to] where he can win and is wanted.”

Joe Krugar cut by the Steelers.

From what I can tell, he and Murphy are the only ones not to survive the cuts to 75.

Steve Smith moved into 9th on the all time WR yardage list yesterday, and then tore his Achilles. Many felt that would be his last snap (no pun intended) in the NFL, but no so according to reports:

http://www.cbssports.com/nfl/writer/jason-la-canfora/25361261/ravens-steve-smith-intends-to-return-in-2016-schedules-achilles-surgery

Ravens star receiver Steve Smith has scheduled a quick surgery on Nov. 9 with intentions of playing football next season, sources said. Smith's season ended Sunday when he tore his Achilles tendon in the Ravens' victory against the Chargers.

Smith had said this would be his final season but several people close to him said he is already talking about a return and the Ravens would welcome him back. Smith faces a long return, but the sooner he gets the Achilles repaired the earlier he could conceivably make it back in 2016. Dr. Andrews, an esteemed surgeon, is scheduled to conduct the repair in Charlotte next week.

Smith was again having a strong season for the Ravens and was by far Joe Flacco's top receiving threat and he is beloved in that locker room. Smith was obviously distraught after suffering the injury Sunday.

He did not want the struggling Ravens to deal him prior to this week's trade deadline -- team brass would not even entertain the thought though other clubs inquired -- and said he would only play for the Ravens. Smith was in his second season with the team ‎and was making $3M this season and is signed for 2017 at $3M as well, which is the final year of a three-year deal he signed with Baltimore after ending his long tenure with the Panthers.

Kaelin Clay just took a punt back 82 yards for the Ravens vs the Browns on MNF, after being signed 2 weeks ago, as a punt returner.

"Clay had 3 punt returns for touchdowns in the PAC-12, for the Utes, last year" - Mike Tirico, ESPN, 11/30/2015

Booker, Carter, Faniaka, Hackett, Norris, Paul.

Go Utes! Get drafted!

From looking at mocks, Booker and Faniaka are virtual locks to get drafted and most of the other guys could go anywhere from 5th to 7th round. I maintain that someone should draft Travis Wilson and turn him into a TE.

Somewhat of a surprise that Booker is still on the board. Two aggies and one cougar taken so far.

I don't have an NFL team, so I just follow the former Utes. Eric Weddle and Steve Smith are hands down my favorite utes ever, so I guess Im a Ravens "fan". With the drafting of Bronson Kaufusi, they now have 3 players from each side of the rivalry. Should make for some fun locker room trash talk.

As always, I just hope our guys end up in good situations with good chances to make the team and contribute to help grow our program, and because theyre all good guys.

I think at this point we have to basically assume Booker's injury is much worse than reported and he has been red flagged by a lot of teams.

I think having the second procedure in February slowed him down. That procedure was just disclosed last week.

Guessing it pushed him back one round, likely goes in the 3rd otherwise.

Broncos keep stealing in NFL Draft with savvy Devontae Booker pick (http://www.cbssports.com/nfl/draft/nfl-draft-scout/25572783/broncos-keep-stealing-in-nfl-draft-with-perfect-fit-at-rb-in-devontae-booker?linkId=24030786)

In Booker, the Broncos have a true North-South plowhorse perfectly suited for the one-cut zone running scheme head coach Gary Kubiak employs. Booker joins C.J. Anderson (http://www.cbssports.com/nfl/players/playerpage/1880820/cj-anderson) andRonnie Hillman (http://www.cbssports.com/nfl/players/playerpage/1701008/ronnie-hillman) in the Broncos' backfield if he recovers from knee surgery. Booker, who tore his meniscus in November against Arizona, told the Denver Post his knee is about "90 percent." Keep seeing he was invited to mini camp. Did he sign a FA deal or just get a camp invite?

After participating in the Bengals mini-camp Gionni Paul had signed a Free Agent Contract with them.

Travis Wilson competed in the same camp. Has not been offered a contract as of now

Apparently he hit a coach in the back of the head with a pass. Whoops.

Tevin Carter was released by the Redskins before mini camp, which makes me wonder how his health is. I hope he catches on somewhere.

I've just sat here and laughed myself silly about this. You know those pivotal moments you can look back in life and say, "That is why I now do x..." ?

That has a high probability of being his and a great one it is.

Mine involves taking a horrible job out of grad school. The first three hours of that job were humiliatingly bad, so bad that I went to lunch and sat in my car deciding whether to just drive home or go back. I had just bought a home, so the thought of unemployment wasn't a good one. I drove back, endured through the next six months until that person I was replacing left, and now I'm a bald angry man for it.

Where would I be had I just left and gone home and found a different job that day? Where will Travis be now that he bounced a ball off a coaches head?

OK, I'm laughing too. Travis, Travis, Travis. I hope that story becomes the one explaining why he became a tight end instead of a quarterback. The kid is a Warrior and a good athlete. I hope he finds someplace to hang on in the NFL.

Broncos Mailbag: Where does Devontae Booker fit in Denver's backfield? (http://www.denverpost.com/broncosmailbag/ci_29873738/broncos-mailbag-how-is-offensive-line-shaping-up)

Booker provides intriguing talent and depth. He ranked as a second rounder on some draft boards. However, he underwent knee surgery to repair his meniscus in November, leaving him easing into the mix. The plan remains for Anderson to receive the bulk of the carries with Hillman providing a change of pace. But just like last season, coach Gary Kubiak will play the most effective back. If Booker picks up pass protection — always a huge challenge for rookies — he will give himself a chance to play on third down. It bears watching in training camp. Booker showed good hands out of the backfield at Utah. That weapon was sorely missing from Denver's offense last season.

So far it seems that a roster spot for Booker is his to lose. Hope he can kick some butt as camp continues and during the preseason.

For all the people that bitch about KW moving all the QBs to other positions (MOose), KenThom is exhibit 1 for why that is a good thing. Last year instead of riding the pine we could have had him at WR, a position that he's good enough at to make the Redskins.

But all indications are Kendal was not wanting to make that move last year

He did an interview after his one handed grab against the Jets and he was talking about battling it out with another guy (TW) I actually got the sense that he was very much a team guy these last two years and essentially did what the coaches asked him to do. It wasn't until the bowl game that he said "screw it, I want to get on the field." Also, probably didn't want to deal with Stubby.

As an aside, he talked about beating his rival in the bowl game and one of the Redskins studio commentators is Trevor Matich. "Hey Kendall, I went to BYU and really didn't appreciate you guys doing that to us in the bowl game." Pretty funny exchange.
